To all my starter replacement experts.. I’m currently clocking a Powermaster starter and it’s been months since I dropped my old starter. Do I need to add this shim? I can’t remember if I even had a shim on there to begin with and I don’t know if I should add it or not. Any input is greatly appreciated thank you!
The only way you know if you need a shim is to put the starter on and pull gear out and see if you can put a paper clip between the gears for clearance. If too tight you add a shim. The stock GM starter at least on mine had no shim. Unfortunately on these cars doing the paperclip test is easier said than done. Powermaster has the directions on website for paperclip test. You could try no shim and if it sounds like it is binding or not disegaing add the shim in.
