Default Why is am I getting a service charging system message?

Can a burned wire to the knock sensor cause me to receive the service charging system message?

Can’t say if it would but when I would come up to a light with the brakes on I would get that same message on my DIC. Come to find out my alternator voltage was dropping into the high 12s thus getting the message which immediately cleared once I accelerated. I put a Mechman alternator on and haven’t seen that display sense.

Two likely culprits, bad alternator, or a bad harmonic balancer.

I bought a new alternator and it went away shortly after I started the engine, but then my voltage would go up and down. As low as nine volts and then as high as fourteen. Ive been told it could be a bad ground. I assumed it was the knock sensor since tht was the only wire I found damaged. How could the harmonic balancer cause that?

Mine was a loose connection on my starter. I wouldn't have believed it if it didn't happen to me. I chased this problem while wrecking 2 alternators.

If the harmonic balancer is bad, the belt slips, causing the alternator to give inconsistent voltage. It usually makes a chirping sound. It could also be a bad belt or belt tensioner. It could be lots of things, good luck.
