Default XM Module?

Recently purchased an OEM head unit from another forum member here. It's XM compatible but do I need to purchase an XM/Sirius module or an antenna or both? The Nav antenna was provided with the unit.

Thanks!

Wrong module, and he needs a GM sir1 module isntead. The one you listed is the din type plug that plugs into after market radios on the back side of the unit.

Look at the cable end that will plug into the factory wiring GM XM harness in the car. Also, all you need to mount is the box with cable to plug it into the factory wiring harness on the very bottom, then plug xm attena cable already in the car to the SIR1 module. The unit will come with a XM attena is you need one, your will not use the next from bottom cable, as well as the box on the right with yellow/black wires is not used for the C6

If he gets a used GM sir1, then will need to send it to be cleared ($40), and it will remarry to his car the first time he starts the car after it been installed.

If you have a base, then module installs were and will connect right to the factory wiring harnness.

If you have a convertible, then the module mounts behind the water fall cover between the seats, and again, factory harness will be in play there instead

The last part of the puzzle, will need a Tech II to turn on the XM module in the OEM radio so you get that band, as well as use the Tech II to clear the radio so it will unlock and marry to your car as well.

As for just buying a used OEM XM module, it can be a hit or miss. First off, the module will need to be cleared so it will remarry to your car ($40), then need to make sure that the module is new enough that it has the Sirus firmware. Hence can find a lot of 2005 modules on the cheap, but have the wrong firmware to connect to siruis isntead (programmed to the old XM before sirus bought them out). GM can send it in to have siruis upgrade it, but if you try to send it in yourself, Sirus will not upgrade it instead (will tell you to just buy a GM SIR1 module new).

So let me take a minute or two to explain why neither of these solutions worked for us.

The XM/Sirius module won't work because it can't plug into an OEM head unit even if the head unit is XM/Sirius ready. The second option the SIR-GM1 will not work if your C6 didn't come with XM as an option. Buying a used C6 head unit that is XM/Sirius will not help. The car needs to have the cable harness assembly that plugs into the SIR under the waterfall on a convertible (which our is) and runs to the head unit. The SIR-GM1 which is BOTH XM and Sirius was intended to replace the OEM XM only module that came with the car before XM and Sirius merged.

Agree for the most part, being that most of the cars that are XM ready on the OEM harness side, will have Bose on the door speaker grills (bose system factory mounted).
As for OEM radios, all will have the XM band programming on them, but that radio band has to be activated with a Tech II if it was not pulled from a car that had XM radio in it that had the XM band already activated.

As for none Bose on the doors, you can still add in the needed wiring harness if you want to use the GMsir 1. its a major PITA, and at that point, better to just add in an after market radio that is XM ready, and the first listed sirus module just plugs into the back of the radio.
