Default Car went dead while driving at night.

So the other night I was just heading back from a local car show, noticed the headlights flicker a couple of times and the stereo went blank once or twice. After around half an hours drive I pulled upto a roundabout and the car went dead, no headlights dash lights just the engine management light, car started straight back up when I dipped the clutch and pressed start button.

No more problems the next day then I went to start it today and it clicked when I went to start it, tried again did the same, tried a third time and it cracked over fine and started. Couldn’t make it happen again.

I checked the earths around the engine in particular the one near the starter all tight and good. Starter had a rusty connection on the lowest point, so cleaned that up as best I could and tightened back up, not brilliant as I don’t have any ramps to lift the car up.

Could this be a dodgy ignition switch, any other ideas?
Thanks

Eddie

Default Thought I would add a picture of the starter terminals

They look a bit shiny as I wire brushed them up, but not sure if it’s rusty because of getting too hot.

Before doing anything else, I'd do an alternator test and a battery load test to confirm the main components were working at nearly peak efficiency.

Battery test:
Battery voltage before start 12.25v
on starting minimum 9.8v
Maximum 14.59

Alternator test :
Voltage before start 12.10v
on initial startup 11.8v
after a a few seconds 14.46v @ idle
14.5v @ 2000rm
