Did a search on here and the clunk Im having doesn't seem to match what im finding. I have a 2007 Base A6 234,000 miles (original rear end fluid, I believe)
At highway speeds if i let off the gas and allow it to coast for a second, then bring the power back in to accelerate, or even maintain speed, there is a hard clunk, as if a transmission mount was loose and the transmission was moving around. I have the car at a local Indy shop, and they are thinking its rear end fluid or rear end needs to be rebuilt. Any ideas?
I've read quite a bit of having your rear differential fluid fixing several problems. I would definitely start there, and check your axle nuts. If that doesn't fix the problem, I'd pull the rear diff cover off and take a peak. If all is good there, I'd start to suspect maybe a torque tube bearing. Good luck, and be sure to report back what the actual fix is!
