The primary purpose of that resonator on an LS3 is to improve volumetric efficiency. Hemholtz resonators do alter sound, but that is secondary. It was added to the LS3 because of the peculiarities of its intake/head design and airflow is different than the LS7 which didn't benefit from it. Removing it on an LS3 reduces torque and impacts backflow over the MAF on stock engines. There is a lot of engineering behind it on LS3s.
Great info. I put a oem zo6 intake on my base 2010. The sound was great at WOT. But after reading your reply I will leave factory intake on my 2012 Grand Sport. I always thought it was just for intake sound deadening!
I wonder if changing the intake manifold or modifying the stock one would have any engineering effects on the need for the Helmholtz radiator portion of the air intake?…any thoughts or experiences.
I put a ls7 intake on my 11 GS, on the long run I ran into surging and bucking in low speeds like in heavy traffic. Finally decided to put back the original one back on and I no longer have the problem.
