I've been noticing the smell of gas fumes from my base 07. I've read on the forum that it could be a cracked fitting on top of the sending unit on the drivers side gas tank. Is there any other location I should check before diving into the replacement?
Not really. If you look at drivers side wheel well and up toward top of tank you may see gas stains or not.
When mine failed it was faint smell in the garage but I knew what it was from reading about it here on the forum. Thought I might luck out but my 09 failed at 74k in July of this year, my car was ten in April of this year so GM would not cover it.
Best of luck to ya, if you have an auto your looking at about 2500 bucks at a stealership.
I wished I had asked this question prior to replacing the driver's fuel sending unit in my '06 Z. Lesson learned for me was from now on, I'll be first inspecting any modifications that had been performed on a car. My gas smell was obvious and I assumed the 90 degree fuel pump fitting on my car had cracked. I should have first carefully looked at what had been added to my car from the previous owner. He had a GM qualified mechanic install an 1/8" stainless steel braided line to the clutch so the clutch's brake fluid could be easily bled. This is a great addition to a car but the hose was in contact with the 3/8" fuel line.. And sure enough, it rubbed through the fuel line and created a smelly fuel leak. After replacing a fuel pump, I then replaced the one piece fuel line. The fuel line job was many times easier than dropping a fuel tank, arm wrestling with the cross over pipe and replacing the fuel sending unit. For me, the cross over pipe was the toughest part; that is until I spent $140 on a new pipe and it then slipped right back together. This money spent on a new cross over pipe was $ well spent. Good luck with this project.

Dirk Miller my corvette tech at the dealership told me this was the toughest part of the job also, he wrestled with it for a few hours and decided to replace it and then all went together very nicely.
Thank God I still had a few months of extended warranty left that I purchased with the car so my total cost was like 200 bucks for the complete job.
I commend you for tackling this project on your own, something I may have done 40 years ago but not at age 60 now.....
The scariest parts for me was working under a lifted car in the garage and the crossover pipe. Am I to understand if I buy a $140 new crossover pipe, it will slide in very easy? I'm being quoted $1500 - $2000. If that crossover pipe is easy, I may tackle it myself.

From talking to the service manager and reading about the crossover pipe, yes it's much easier when new. Plus at 140 bucks it's not that bad a price compared to the aggravation.
I'm checking out the dealerships before I attack this thing on my own. Strike one. Grapevine dealership said no, it's past 10 years. They told me to call GM and see what they would do. However, the number he gave me didn't work. Does anyone know the number to GM that I can call?

Head over to the sticky at the top of the page in the C6 General Discussion page and look through there, plenty of info of what gm is and is not covering, I can pretty much tell you if your (vette) older than ten they won't do a thing, it will be out of pocket unless you have some extended warranty.
Stupid thing is some C7's are already having this failure as gm didn't do a thing to correct it, yet the caddy's that have this system they are covering for life of vehicle?..
