Default My first oil change experience

As most of you know I recently acquired my first Corvette-a beautiful 2007 LT3 convertible in Monterey red. I’ve got a litany of things to do but I recently did my first oil change.

I get together several things:

1. A five quart jug of Mobil 1 synthetic and another quart of the same oil. My research indicated a C6 oil change requires 5.5 quarts. I purchased this from Walmart

2. A M1-113A Mobil one oil filter. I researched filters and decided to go with this one. I purchased two of them from Walmart.

3. A new magnetic drain plug. I purchased this one from Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001NYMUWI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001NYMUWI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
. I didn’t know the condition of the drain plug and washer so I figured I would have one on hand just in case.

4. An OZUZ fender cover. I have purchased two of these when I first bought the car and they are the perfect length and width and have hooks to hold the cover in place.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N9JK709/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N9JK709/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

5. Torin floor jacks. I really like these floor jacks because they have pins as well. They are double locking
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00026Z3E0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00026Z3E0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I also have some rubber inserts that keep the jack from marring the aluminum.

6. Dayton floor jack

7. Hand tools

I only jacked the car up on the drivers side behind the front wheel using a puck. I didn’t see the need to have the car up on all fours wheels. The oil pan drain plug came out quite easily. Their was crud on the magnetic end but no metal that I could see. I lowered the car a bit while still on the jack to allow the oil to drain. I let it drain for a good five minutes.

To my horror someone had used a Pronto oil filter. It was pretty tough to get off I had to use a oil filter wrench that has the jaws. Problem is as you turn these jaws collapse the oil filter. So I went oil school-I shoved a stubby screwdriver into the oil filter and turned it. Problem solved.

As I went to install the new oil drain plug(why not) I noticed a good thing and a bad thing about the new one. The magnet was much stronger than the OEM magnet. That’s good. But I also noticed that the magnet in the new plug appeared to be glued into the plug itself. The OEM one was not glued. It would spin in place. I was afraid that over time the glued in magnet would separate and find its way into my motor. I decided not to use it as a result.

I filled the new filter with oil, put some oil on the rubber gasket and installed it hand tight. I then installed the drain plug.

In all a quick bit of maintenance. Hope this helps someone on the forum.
