i recently had installed in my '09 corvette, a new crate engine ( LS3 ). i'm using the original alternator.
with our current hot weather run in the bay area, i'm now seeing the volts drop to as low as 11.9 when, idling and the fans on.
once i'm moving it will get to the 13's or maybe low 14 volts. i don't remember this happening prior to engine install.
as far as i know, this is the original alternator ( 170k miles ). i'm the second owner ( 01/2017 ).
is this normal or, is it time to replace the alternator?
Before condemning the alternator, check the basics...
Power lead connections (through the starter to the fuse blocks...) and grounds.
But yeah, at 170K it might be time for a new one.
Avoid the Kragen's, etc rebuilts. Nothing but trouble, and well documented here.
My car would dip to 11.9 while fans running on hot days and cruising slow. it used to run about 13.7 max. I would highly recommend "the big 3" upgrade. I did it to my car over the winter and it helped tremendously! just regular driving I run consistently at 14.1-14.3 ....

just as i was going down that path ( possible new alternator ), i had a low fuel & service fuel system warning pop up this morning.
no CEL but i ran my scanner and a P2066 code was shown ( fuel level sensor ). the live data shows that the fuel level is at 100% ( i did fill up this morning, just after i got the warning ).
my last car was a whack-a-mole car, now this one seems to be suffering the same fate. it all started with a faint tick back last October. and it's been a long road since then.
