I've been swapping the clutch on my c6z. my torque tube input shaft was worn on the tip, so I ordered another used one on eBay and it came like this.
Is this common? Is there a solution?
It is common. After 143K miles, my input shaft was eroded as well, though not as bad as the one on the left of your picture.
Send your input shafts to Jason at Texas Drivetrain Performance in Hurst, TX. He can weld up the pilot bearing surface and turn it back down for a near-interference fit with your new pilot bearing.
Save yourself the headache and just buy a new torque tube input shaft.
Yes, the Input shaft on the left can be turned down, snout sprayed weld build up, then turned to size, but since the the spray weld surface is not hardened, it's only last about 1 clutch, before the pilot bearing does it in again.
As for the used input shaft on the right that you bought, forget the snout wear, and look at the side of the spines of the shaft that have chatter peen marks, and will cause clutch release problems. Hence clutch disc rides the spines, and when the spines sides of the land and grooves are not smooth, causes chatter as the disc is trying to make it way back against the flywheel via the pressure plate .
Thanks everyone.
The car has under 60k miles, the bearings are all good but the bellhousing was broken, held on by 1 bolt with a gap on the bottom. That's what damaged the input shaft.
I have replaced pretty much everything. It should go in this weekend.
