Default Upgraded brakes

I have a base c6. What is the better option? Upgrading the brakes to z51, or going aftermarket like powerstop? When going with aftermarket is it possible to use the z51 calipers? I'd prefer to have calipers that say corvette.

I would skip upgrading to the Z51 brakes as even a jump to the Z06 brakes only improve the stopping distance by 3 feet.

I would suggest just upgrading the rotors and pads. I prefer power stop Z26's. Also the base brakes are the lightest out of the bunch reducing your rotational mass if you are into drag racing.

I did some reading on powerstops website, seems like the best way to go. Would the z51 replacement powerstop K4400-26 fit my base calipers? Or would I need to upgrade those?

If you're not the original owner, I'd suggest before you do anything, verify the rotor size and compare it with the codes on the glovebox side panel, since J55 brakes (sometimes called Z51) were a part of both the F55 option and Z51 option in '08 and also a stand-alone option. J55 front rotors are 13.4" vs JL9 at 12.8". Rears are 13.0" vs 12.0" respectively. Many owners have swapped sizes both directions and even though the calipers will work, the swap does require the mounting brackets to match the rotor sizes.
Assuming your current rotors are the JL9 size, the calipers will work just fine with J55 rotors, because the front ones are 100% identical and the rears have a slightly larger piston than the J55 caliper. More stopping power is available with either size rotors by choosing better pads. However, even with the JL9 brakes and cheap aftermarket pads, your Vette will still stop quicker than 80-90% of all other cars.

Hawk HPS pads. Great stopping power, very low dust, lower noise too.

Depends on your budget. Any brake upgrade other than the Z51 will require new wheels or spacers. I recently went with the Z51 style upgrade on my 08 base not for better stopping (car stopped fine) but more for the looks of the slightly larger rotors. Z06 brakes stuff and correct wheels = $$$

I was looking to stick with z51 style but not go with OEM, I was looking at PowerStop z51 replacement rather than a base model replacement. I don't see what that wouldn't work but not sure. Also, I feel the same way about the look. Even though they are good brakes they look too small.

I did OE Delco rotors (Z51 from rock auto.com) for $250 and got Hawk HPS pads from eBay for $175. Better stopping than OEM, about 10% of the dust, and a lot quieter.

Is that retaining the use of the stock calipers?

Oh ok... I have base brakes and I'm not sure if z51 and base rotors use the same calipers.

Same calipers, you would just need the z51 caliper brackets

Base and Z51 calipers are the same, except the rear on a Z51 has a 2mm smaller piston, if you were to get the powerstop. In Z51 sizes you will still need Z51 brackets

Thank you. If I am understanding you correctly, I only need z51 brackets for the rears? The front's I can re-use.

To upgrade from base brakes to Z51 you need the following GM Parts

89060328 (2) Front Brake Rotors
89060329 (2) Rear Brake Rotors
88964166 (2) Front Brake Caliper Bracket
88964167 (2) Rear Brake Caliper Bracket

Except if it were me I'd use BrakeMotive rotors over GM for several reasons.... they are cheaper ($128 a set), they are zinc dipped so they don't rust, and they are drilled correctly for right and left, unlike the POS GM rotors, which are not.

BUT, the GM drilled rotors look 10x better than any drilled and slotted rotors. Those look like Pep Boys ricer items.
