Default Cam question

Will a LS7 cam work in a LS3? Obviously the difference in the rocker arm ratios will lower the lift to LS3 levels. Same journal size?

Yes, it will bolt in there. If someone gave it to me, I'd give it to someone else and get a custom grind or a mild shelf grind if that's what you're looking for. It's not enough of an upgrade to be worth the trouble of a cam swap. Lots and lots of options than can exhibit perfect or near perfect manners and fuel eco while giving a much greater return for your time, efforts, and $'s.

Was just wondering because I’ve seen some LS7 cams for sale at good prices. Obviously, to be worthwhile the duration, lift, and LSA would need to be something I was looking for.

You can always replace your OEM 1.7 ratio rockers in your LS3 with a set of Comp Cams 1.8 ratio roller rockers ... that's what I did.

It will increase the lift on both the intake and exhaust .030" (30 thousands) and they are drop-in replacements.

Certainly you will get more lift out of an LS7 cam with Comp Cams 1.8 rockers than you will with the OEM LS3 rockers.

Comp Cams P/N: 1678-16

$ 378 . . . . https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-1678-16

_________________________________

Example using stock LS3 cam specs:

LS3 Cam Lift: . From .551” / .525” .. . To .583”/ .556”

(the photo below says 1.7 on the rocker arm, but the P/N I showed above are for the 1.8 ratio rockers)

And with these Comp Cam rockers, the needle bearing will never fall out of the rockers like they sometimes do with the OEM LS3 rockers.

EDIT: . . You may need slightly taller valve covers with these rockers.

I did buy an LS7 cam a while back. Think I paid all of 75 bucks for it. Didn't have very many miles on it either. I was going to use it in a TVS supercharged LQ9 (6.0L iron block truck engine). After thinking about what I mentioned in the earlier post, I ended up custom speccing a 218/234 118 with .600 lift on both sides. Much more capable cam that would pull better down low and better up top too vs the LS7 cam. Perfect manners also. I think I would have had to change several things regarding the cam sensor to make a Gen 4 cam work in a Gen 3 LS engine also.
