they've got big parts washers that can handle the block and parts once disassembled... it does a good job at cleaning the block for the rebuild....

What’s typical cost for an engine rebuild? I saw where you can get a new ls3 motor for 5k

If somebody installed those just prior to failure I'd say they possibly owe you a new motor.

Have to question whether they installed them incorrectly and the new lifters starved for oil and failed? Or possibly cam lobe was already excessively worn from prior failed lifter that went unchecked?
Oil level below 1.5qrts down?
Do you have the old lifters to inspect for prior damage?

NFW would I drive that anywhere. It could and most likely will cost you additionally versus the cost of a 100mi tow.

Rebuilt longblocks are a bit more than $5k rt now. I've been waiting for machinig/parts/assembly on a 408 since Feb...hopefully stock parts are more readily available versus forged components right now.
There are a couple builders out there that may have a drop-in already to ship. Just be careful who you purchase from.
Good luck.

I do believe the motor had this issue going on prior to the new parts being put in because I noticed the motor was excessively noisy shortly after I bought it and brushed it off thinking it was typical LS3 noises but then it seemed to get slightly worse and that’s when I started investigating a little more. The motor was a bit quieter after the new parts were put in and it eliminated a ticking noise on the passenger side but not the same exact ticking noise that was present on the driver side on the same cylinder that was there when I bought it. I did ask the shop to inspect the cam lobe‘s before putting the new lifters in and they said they did but there’s no way for me to confirm that I just have to take their word for it and whether or not the motor was turned over to inspect each load all the way around I have no idea. My guess
is that there has been damage to something in the bottom end and it has taken out a cam lobe or two or vice versa because I have magnetic material in the motor as well as non-magnetic material. Also I’ve decided that I am not going to drive it to the shop I’m going to have it towed or find someone with a trailer.

I've heard good things about texas speed motors.... along with blueprint motors...

jegs or summit would probably be able to help if you wanted to just pick up a new long block and sell off the old one to recoup some cash....

yeah I found online I can get a brand new long block for 5k.... I was wondering if I’d be able to do anything with the stock motor to get some cash back. Idk I’m going to wait for the oil analysis to come back and let the shop open it up, then go from there

well, I kinda figured that too but when I had the stock lifters pulled none of them looked like your photo but prob 6 or 7 of mine had scoring on them. Like one or two perfect lines all the way around the roller, the rest looked perfect.
here is a pic of how they looked, running your finger across the roller there was only one that I could actually feel the groove.

many ls engine I pulled apart I never seen not one mark on the roller. Just saying I guess we will know soon enough what the culprit is. I hope anyway. I hate to hear they have know idea on how this happen. I hope u get a break and at least know that tick u heard was for real and not in your head.

lol yea I was banging my head against the wall because I knew that ticking noise I had was not “normal ls3 noises” so it may be a good thing I found out when I did that I have a serious problem because eventually the motor may have let go. I knew as soon as I saw those stock lifters I had bigger issues than I originally thought. I can’t remember exactly but I wanna say about 6-8 of the lifters looked like that and one in particular was scored deeper than the others. I really hope the new lifters I had put in aren’t ruined already but most likely they are..
I’m dropping the car off at the shop next week and I should also have my oil analysis results back soon. I will update the thread with results on both!

So this is a bit surprising... I got the oil analysis back and it was fairly normal despite having an alarming amount of metal in the oil.
I don’t know for sure but I believe the oil had 200-300 miles on it and was consistent with typical weather after 500 miles. Nothing really stood out as being really high.

I know, that’s my biggest concern 😬
I dropped it off at the shop the other day and they are going to look into it but the only way to know if there is bearing damage is to tear it down, but I don’t think they had planned on doing that.

The only reason to drop oil pan is to check a bearing. And the oil pick up oil filter.

I guess that’s what they are going to do, plus maybe clean it out. I’m thinking really hard about going ahead and having them put a cam in it while they got it
