Default Smoldering Wire Smell

Hello fellow Vette owners. In March, I bought a 2011 C6 GS Convertible with just over 8K miles on it. It's a beautiful car and runs well. Since having it, I changed the radio, but no other mods. It was my daily driver until the stereo started acting wonky and the smell of burning wires became fairly regular.

After sitting for about two months (had knee surgery or I would have done it sooner), I just drove it to my new home Saturday, about 1.5 hours from where I used to live, and it did great. Although the battery was dead, the car ran fine and the alternator seemed to put a good charge on the battery. Last night I went out and the battery was dead again... or so I thought. Funny that the radio was working fine on my drive Saturday and no smell of burning wires. I had AAA come out again this morning to jump me and now the radio doesn't work anymore and as I let it run today to charge the battery, the cabin smelt like burning wires when I went back out to check on the running car.

The car has a funny, what looks like a rubbed spot under the hood on the fire suppressing material attached to the inside of the hood. This was there when I bought it and I probably should have walked, but it was a great deal. I think something may be wrong with the alternator, since that is where the spot is above, but it is charging fine.

What could this be? Anyone have any ideas? I have an appointment at the dealer Wednesday to get an assessment. I see that there have only been a few C6 fires reported online and most were caused by something else (header burning through clutch line, aftermarket stuff, etc), but nothing about smoke of smell inside the cabin.

Finally, I found an interesting device when I opened the fuse box under the passenger seat. It was a mild2wild controller for the exhaust. Needless to say, I pulled that crap out and replaced the fuses. I made sure the fuses were the correct amp as required by the schematic provided with the car. Everything worked perfectly until last night. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have pics. Wish I could post them...

Maybe it’s the radio you changed…let your dealer make the assessment on what it is !!…electrical smell can be coming from anywhere.

That's what I am thinking too. I pulled the fuse for the radio, put it back in, and the radio works fine. Crazy stuff going on. It goes in on Wednesday. Thanks for the reply.

On the mild to wild do you have remotes to open your exhaust or a push button you activate via foot on driver side?

Why would you remove it? It does draw current if left in the off position if you do not wire it to not do that. You can reference mild to wild install documents.

Is your burning wire smell in the cabin or under the hood or outside the vehicle?

What other mods did the car come with?
