Started up car this morning and charging system check came on, battery voltage 11.6 and dropping. Drove car to get checked, almost there Alternator lit up and voltage up to 14.2 everything's great.
Test showed normal, anyone have this issue? Seems whatever energizes or lights up alternator wasn't working then it was. Internal? External? If so what?
Not sure about these alternators but back in the day alternators had 3 diodes. One would fail and the light would come on. Soon the 2 remaining would pick up the load and the light would go out. Soon however, since they were now overlaoded another would go out. Then the same scenario would occur. Finally the last would burn out but by then you were far from home thinking there was nothing wrong. Just my experiences. More than once. Until i learned about this
DIC and voltage gage on the dash is telling you the voltage at the ECM.
So from ECM back up line on the postive side feeding it, ECM to BCM, BCM to engine fuse box, Engine fuse box terminal to battery, battery to starter solenoid for the connection point of that cable to the alternator cable end, and then starter solenoid to alternator. And that is just the positive side, while the negative battery cable goes to the engine block, while the ground for the ECM goes to the chassis rail.
So alternator could be putting out it normal 14.7 volts, while the problem is not at the alternator instead.
Unfortunately, my alternator was whining and by the end of the night the “service charging system” showed on my dash. Any recommendations for a new alternator? I looked up on summit racing and found ACDelco Alternator 19134486 145 amps but it’s remanufactured. The other option is ACDelco Alternator 25888970 but only 100 amps, which I think is the oem for my 2007 C6 Corvette LS2 mileage is 21500+ kms or 13,000+ miles…. Planning to sell it. I’m based in the PH.
When it comes to Corvette parts, it's going to cost you a boat load of money in shipping costs to get parts to the Philippines (if you can find anyone that will even ship Corvette related parts to the PI)
I lived in Bacolod City (Negros Island) for 5 years and went through the same **** trying to get parts for my Harley I had while living there.
BTW ... I just replaced the alternator in my 2011 GS with a new ACDelco P/N 25888970. Cost was $344 to the door here in the US. Wish I could help you with your problem.
Thank you for the reply Turbo6TA! I bought the alternator already and yes the shipping fee is pretty expensive plus taxes when it gets here. May I ask if you’re still staying in Bacolod? Hehe.
No, I am now living in Florida ... I moved to the PI in 2006, and stayed there until 2011. This all happened after I retired from Federal Civil Service as an instructor pilot (rotary wing).
I lived for the first year up in Angeles City and then for the last 4 years in Bacolod City.
I really liked the Philippines, but just got burned out living in a 3rd world environment after 5 years, so I came back to the US and bought a house here in Florida.
That’s completely understandable. Lol. Traffic is terrible too! Haha. But everything’s improving “a bit” so far... Drove my corvette to Angeles and Tagaytay. I just hate the elevated parking ramps…
