Hi folks, I have an issue with second gear grinding in my 2011 GS. Been experiencing it since 6k miles and car currently only has 9k on it. Contacted GM and as expected since car is well out of warranty they want nothing to do with it. Contacted Tremec and they gave me every possible excuse as to what else could be wrong without actually telling me what I know to be the truth. I know that they've got issues with the second gear synchronizers and it is a well known common issue. I'm wondering who here has this problem? A built trans will run me around $6K plus clutch and hydraulics while I'm in there not to mention thousands in labor I am sure. It's a tough pill to swallow with such low mileage. Anyhow, sorry for the rant just very frustrating how no one stands behind their products and takes accountability when there is an issue. Thanks folks.
Sorry to hear about your issues, have you tried using a different fluid? I used Redline in my TR6060 that was in my Camaro and it made a huge difference, I have not switched over yet in the GS.
clutch bleed will fix the issue. If you can, install a remote bleed kit. If you cant yet, you can do a vacuum bleed through the MC but its not as effective. Or, if you pull the intake manifold off, you can reach the bleeder screw at the very back. Itll dribble clutch fluid into your bellhousing though. If you have headers, the clutch grind (for me) is exacerbated because the header heats up the fluid, expanding some out and pulling a vac/some air into the slave cylinder. I generally turkey-baster fluid swap the clutch fluid once very 2-3 months, and do a vac bleed once a year or so... Its all temporary measures until I get a remote bleeder in when I do my clutch.
Most sporty cars have some 1-2 shifting issues because 2nd gear synchros are much tougher for racing. Every fast car I've had has had a crunchy 1-2 when cold, that gets better as it warms up. If it doesnt get better as it warms up, I think it might be a misspaced slave cylinder? The C6 crunch is more noticeable because of the clutch bleeding issue above...
Mike thanks for the explanation. If it were a hydraulic issue, wouldn’t it manifest in every gear? I’ve done the ranger method too and didn’t seem to help. I’ve never actually had it bled. If I’m paying to drop the trans I’ll be replacing the damn thing.
It's a known issue in the early 6060's. Probably won't get better. I now have 100+k miles on mine.
My '08 is much worse when cold, but still does it even when hot.
I've tried different brands of fluid and they all seemed about the same. I now have the current recommended GM fluid.
The warranty time limit is not the issue. Even when new, the dealer MAY have changed the fluid, but that was it.
"Within GM spec's".
Supposed to have been fixed in the later models, but not always.
So, you probably just have to live with it. I often shift 1 to 3. And when shifting 1-2, I usually pause in neutral and then feel for 2nd gear. Don't force it, especially when cold.
The Corvette guys call it "notchy", when they don't want to admit that it is a problem trans.

1-2 is always the hardest shift so it shows up the most there, i think. Def replace the slave cylinder but ask for a remote bleeder installed at the same time
My 2010 Grand Sport with 61k will occasionally grind 2nd when cold. Never when hot. So for now if it's cold I just go 1-3 until it's warmer. MGW shifter and stock shifter definitely were better than the Hinson shifter, I think the extremely short throw was causing issues too.
I am having this exact same issue! I just purchased my z06 and 1-2nd is grinding after about 500 miles that I have put on it. The car has 22,000 miles. What did you end up doing?
Clutch bleed isn't gna fix anything along with fluid change. The 6060s don't take the grinding like the t56s did. It needs rebuilt an thats that. It could have a bearing issue coming about making it push on the gear set causing the grind.
