Default Axle nuts - thread lock 271 vs 272

I am going to change my axle nuts sometime soon so I ordered some loctite 272 and was shipped loctite 271. Do I need to return it and get the 272 or is the 271 okay to use? From what I can tell the 272 is rated for a little higher temps. Thanks

Loctite 272 is higher strength and much better resistance for thermal differences, better for vibration and shock, preferred for larger threaded nuts and bolts over 1" in diameter. Also, 272 offers better corrosion resistance. 271 is meant for smaller nuts and bolts under 1" in diameter.
I used 272 when I changed my axle nuts for those reasons.

Got ya, I kind of figured so. I contacted the seller and he is going to ship me the 272 so I’ll just wait on that. Thank you

One way to approach this is to use two nuts on each side. Holds well without threadlock.

Yeah I read that somewhere and may end up doing that because not only was a sent the wrong type of loctite but I’ve also realized what I was sent is fake. I bought it from an EBay seller and apparently there’s a lot of counterfeit bottles on there. The bottle has a bunch of Chinese writing on it and doesn’t have a legit QR code on it like it’s supposed to. It’s a large bottle that’s filled about 1/4 if that… No way I’m using that crap on my car.

The nuts really don't move, the splines fret under constant loading and unloading, which causes some slop in the fit between the hub and axle splines.

Its okay to reuse the old ones to lock the new ones? Also I know the torque on the nut is 160ft lbs but how tight did you torque down the outside nut (old nut)?

Loctite is anaerobic, you will never buy a full bottle, if you do it will be set when you get it.

Makes sense…. I just found out my local advance auto sales the 272 so I’m gonna pick up some there.

Probably the most discussed subject in the early years was what the correct torque value for the rear axle nuts. They started with 118, then to140 and in 2009, increased to 160. Some cars with the 160 values snapped their axles, so in 2011 GM reduced the torque back to 140 according to the GM tech Talon 90. I torqued my new axle nuts to 140ft-lbs and used the old nut to lock against the new one, also at 140 ft-lbs.
Here is the thread.
Depending on the year, service manuals show 118, 160 and 151. It's confusing, thus why I split the difference and did it at 140. The ZR1 uses Nord-Lock washers that prevents the axle nut from backing off. I thought about getting some if these, but sre not readily available in my home town.

yeah I noticed a lot of ppl mentioned different torque values but I had decided I was going to go with 140ft lbs. I haven’t changed them yet I’m still on the fence about the Loctite. I did pick up some 272 Loctite but some ppl said to use it and there’s also been several ppl tell me not to use it. So I haven’t decided if I’m just going to use the old nut and double nut it or just use the Loctite and new nut.

another vote for double-nutting. Learned this long long ago, on another type of car that I tracked and had multiple wheel bearing issues. One of the first things I did on this car.
