shift to reverse doesnt clear even after replacing reverse sensor
i have a shift to reverse that does not clear at times when i shut down the car. Fiddling with the stick shift has never worked to clear it. so far either taking it back out for a drive of letting it set for a while has been the only thing to clear it.
But not a big deal, right. Problem has been had a thousand times, get a new reverse sensor for the lower one on the trans and it will be fine. NOPE.
i replaced the sensor and the intermittent problem remains.
So today it happens, i grab a jack and stands, put the rear in the air and grab the old sensor (which checked out fine with meter). i unplug the pig tail from the car sensor and plug it into the original one that is in my hand. i push the steel ball in with my thumb. hold it in a few seconds. do it again. come out from under the car, still not shut down. i try it again, but ground the sensor body to the trans in case that would matter. repeat holding down the plunder ball. still not shutting down.
when i did this test the shifter was in neutral. so i shifted the trans in reverse to repeat the test and the car shutdown (i had plugged everything back in underneath (dang it). im not sure the gear has to be in reverse as this is what the sensor is for. next time it does it i will repeat with the trans in reverse
so my full testing didnt get complete. But it seems there is more to this shutdown circuit problem than just this sensor
i did not replace the upper reverse sensor since i believe it is not for this function, maybe im wrong.
has anyone had this problem where replacing the lower sensor did not fix the issue and something else solved the issue?
thank you
chris
the 2005 has two sensors as is known. my trans had been out before i got the car. they reversed the two plugs, so my shift to reverse sensor was now the top one. i had replaced the bottom one. i replaced the top one as well and put a littel dielectric grease in them and all is well now, or at least so far.
the old ones test ok on a meter, very simple switch design, but something was wrong, maybe fluid had made it inside, who knows.
Anyway, for the 2005 guys, check both switches in case you harness got swapped.
