Default Engine oil cooler recommendations

My oil temps are getting hotter than I want, I’ve seen temps up past 260 just driving in town with the ac on, without the ac they come down and that’s driving really nice. I’m running mobile 1 5-30 but thinking about changing to 0-40 mobile 1 until I get the oil temps under control. Car is a base model making over 800 at the wheels. I’d like to be able to not to worry about it but not really having a ton of luck finding what others have done as far as coolers. I already have a dewits radiator with the dual dewits fans so changing radiators isn’t something I want to do. Also adding a z06 or similar doesn’t sound like it would work as I have an intercooler taking up space in front of the radiator. Thank you for any feedback

Thank you, I like the idea of having the thermostat in the improved racing cooler, I see it has pre made lines which would make a person think they have a suggested location for it but I don’t see where.

Their cooler can go in the factory GS/Z06/ZR1 location. The lines are on the long side, so you could probably mount the cooler higher or lower or lay it flat.

Do you have one of their coolers? Are they worth the price tag?

I bought one to replace a damaged oil cooler in my C6Z, I should be getting it in a week or so.

I honestly don't know if they're worth it yet, but it does seem that they've put a lot of thought into the engineering and design - that's a good sign at least.

It has some good reviews:

Hey thanks a bunch for posting those links, I appreciate that a bunch! Wonder if I could get a kit without one if the ends of the AN lines attached cause I won’t have room to put it in the factory location.

200°F. I'm still finishing up the motor so I haven't had a chance to see what temperatures I get. With the previous oil cooler in the radiator end-tank I saw oil temperatures in the 260° - 280° ballpark in the mountain twisties.

Oh wow that’s definitely much hotter than I’d like to see for sure. Was you running it pretty hard?

Yes, I would only see those temperatures while getting on it. Just driving around, oil temperature was usually 215° - 235°, or around 10° to 15° over whatever the water temperature was.

Ok ok just driving around not getting on it at all I’m seeing 260 temps with the AC on

I have a C6Z with the dry sump system so my problem was actually that the engine oil was too cool for street driving, especially in the cooler ambient temperature of the Pacific Northwest.

My oil temps would stick around 160, which is too low for aggressive revving and driving. I got the 180f kit to hopefully keep things in a good range.

Also, it's worth noting this from their website:

"In some cases, mounting the cooler in the factory orientation may result in elevated coolant temps, due to insuffcient airflow to the radiator. This can be remedied by mounting the cooler at an angle to allow more airflow to the radiator, or completely flat in front of the radiator. Note that to mount the cooler laying flat, custom mounting brackets will have to be made and a hole must be cut in the plastic undertray. Optional brackets for this mounting orientation will be available in the future."

Here's a thread discussing this very thing:

So that thread says it has to go in front of the radiator, I don’t think I have any more room in front of my radiator due to the intercooler. Now I’m really not sure what to do. I need one I can make brackets for and put behind the fog light or something.

Just a note, the oil temp sensor on the dry sump system is located at the bottom of the oil tank. Oil is a little cooler here during street driving. We have found that by the time oil reaches our thermostatic oil cooler adapter (after flowing through the oil pump and some engine oil passages), it gains back some heat. For example, oil in the tank might be reading around 160F, but at the oil cooler adapter, it's around 180F. That means that the oil going into your engine bearings is actually 180F, not 160F. Other times, in track scenarios, oil after the oil cooler adapter may be cooler than the tank, if it's flowing through the oil cooler. You just have to keep this in mind when monitoring oil temps.

In your case you would probably need to run a smaller cooler in one (or both) of the fog light locations. We may look into making a kit like this in the future as well, but it won't be any time soon.

Thank you for the reply, so I’m assuming your cooler will not work with an intercooler in front of the radiator is that correct?

It really depends on how big the intercooler is, positioning, etc. However, I wouldn't recommend stacking an oil cooler + intercooler + radiator + AC condenser... It's a little much and won't be very efficient. You should definitely mount some smaller coolers in the fog light areas. If necessary you could do dual coolers, one on each side. I would start with one on the driver's side first and monitor temps.

The pic below is what one of our customer did. He used our MHX-520 oil cooler, which is actually pretty decent in size. The MHX-514 cooler might be easier to fit.

That looks really good and more like what I had in mind, can you get me a price on everything for that?
