After two steering racks, and two (used) EBCMs, i am still having issues. (Heavy steering, "Service Vehicle Soon", C0450).
I took my car to a dealership and they diagnosed a bad EBCM. They wanted ~1500 to replace.
I have found a new EBCM on RockAuto and plan to replace with a new piece. Does anybody know what type of programming is needed with a NEW EBCM? I have read on here the EBCM will have to be flashed.
Does the dealer have to do this? Will the car drive without being reprogramed? Will this have any effect on a tune i am running?
A new EBCM will need to be programmed….there are some diagnostic shops that do programming…it doesn’t have to be a dealership…I see you’re in Houston…call Oz at Oz Mechanics…he does programming and he is in Pasadena…highly recommended !!…I wouldn’t put much faith in the dealers diagnosis…get a 2nd opinion from Oz…if you changed the rack twice and 2 EBCM it may not be either…was an electrical diagnosis performed by the dealership or the parts were just “shotgunned” ??…what sets that DTC is “the actuator current exceeds 150 mA”…you may have something like a short to ground in the wiring.
Can an ECM be programmed out of the car just on the basis of the VIN? Because without a functional ECM not sure how he is going to get the car there ...
I agree that it is anormal, i would look for alternative issues that could be damaging the electronics too.

OP has an EBCM/VES Actuator issue….not an ECM (engine).
My apologies for using ECM instead of EBCM, without an ECM I would think that the engine wouldn't even start. None the less I am still wondering if the car is driveable? Wouldn't it go into à limp mode of sorts?
EBCM needs to be programmed because it has other function as well not just brakes.
Shouldn’t be too bad. Less than an hour of labor at the dealer to pair it with the rest of the modules. If not programmed correctly it will not communicate with the ecm and BCM.
