Hello, I replaced my harmonic balancer and ever since then ive been having issues. When I first started the car after installing the balancer, I was able to smell a metal burning smell, exactly like what youd smell while welding or grinding metal, except everything sounded normal. Didnt think much of it at first, but now I have two major issues. My first issue is that I’m getting code P0330, Knock sensor 2 bank 2. I havent yet looked at the sensor because theres an even bigger issue im having. My battery will not charge at all. The battery is good and takes a charge from our charger, but the alternator no longer charges it. I went out and bought a brand new alternator and it did not solve the issue. I went back under the car and checked the wires to the starter and everything was fine. Bottom wire was a little loose but nothing changed after tightening it.
also, the car sounds perfectly normal when its running and the new harmonic balancer also looks great w no wobble
If you smell metal burning, i would make sure nothing is touching the balancer. Check the power steering line, might have accidentally moved the metal line over a little. Did you put a load test on the battery? It might take a charge, does it hold a charge? Did you have your old alternator and new alternator checked? I bought an alternator from a local store and it was bad. Went to the same chain and the one they had was bad also. Lucky for me they had 2 in stock and the second one was good.

The metal burning smell went away after a few seconds of the car being initially started, doesn't happen anymore. As for the battery, I can charge it up to around 13v, and it'll last the short drive to the auto parts store and back before the battery becomes completely dead. seems to work fine but I have not gotten it tested. My old alternator worked perfectly before the harmonic balancer replacement, it just couldn't charge the battery after the harmonic balancer replacement. Very weird timing for it to suddenly go bad, and then also get a bad alternator. I will have this alternator tested but I highly doubt it's an issue with it
Based on your observations, I would guess that the HB is spinning on the crank due to a loose crank bolt. Not sure how you performed the proper bolt torquing process or maybe you reused your original bolt that is a one-time torque-to-yield bolt and should be replaced.
Reevaluate your situation and post any additional observations including the process you used to replace the HB.

Good luck...GD
Thank you, I am sure it is fine though, I did do the proper process of using a new bolt, and I went through the process of seating it at 240 ft lbs with the old bolt, then inserting the new bolt at the proper torque for final installation with red loctite. I am using a Dorman balancer and bolt, not the ARP bolt that some people use. The balancer seems to be working as intended after all that

anybody got any ideas?
Do you have any electrical skills and have a DVOM….just “checking” the wires is not good enough…you should perform a voltage drop check on the positive and negative side of the charging system…you familiar with this check ??

I am not familiar with this, I will look into getting the stuff necessary to do this and check today
I'm going to take a wild guess that the fusible link for the charging circuit has melted, effectively opening that circuit, and could be the source of burning smell, As suggested by C5 diag, you need to check the circuits (wires) with a meter.
