Default C6 Telescoping Steering Column Removal

I've seen a number of threads that involve removal of the steering column, but I have not been able to find the actual procedure for doing it, like anywhere online (I don't have a shop manual).
I need to pull the column on my 2011 GS. I have it all disconnected and loose, but it will not clear between the upper dash support structure and the lower steel cross-tube. Photo shows the problem area. Column is not lifted in photo, but it won't clear when it is lifted.
Help on this would be greatly appreciated.

It's been a while since I've removed a t&t column. Did you collapse the steering shaft after removing the nut and bolt? raise the column up to clear the tie bar, pull the column towards you, move the steering wheel end to the left and rotate the column. It should come out. worse case, you will need to remove the motor.

The telescoping column has a pretty massive mechanism for that function, so looks a lot different than yours, but thanks for the pics.
Haven't gotten back to it yet.

@Charlie Petty How did you end up solving this issue? I need to also pull the column on my 11 GS due to the bearing popping out and unseating my steering wheel sensor.

Well, it took me a while to get back to this project, but the time off must have given me a "new perspective" somehow.
I sat back down in the car, studied the situation for about a minute and figured how to pull it out at the required angle.
It came out without any problem with no further wrenching/disassembly beyond what I had done months prior.
The removal is now a few months ago, so I don't recall the exact vectors for pulling, but I think it was downward and to the left.
I don't know why I couldn't figure it out the first time.

Are you pulling a T/T column?

Charlie

I just went through this with my 11GS as well and made a post on it. I was able to get the bearing back into place with the column still in the car.

total pain in the *** and took a while to figure out but it’s possible and of course, I’d do it in a 1/4 of the time knowing what I do now.

PB Blaster to soak the shaft over night. Slide the steering angle sensor back on the shaft and out of the way, then a long, thick flat head screw driver to hold the bearing in place while you telescope the shaft in/out. There is a pivot point you can use for the flat head to get leverage on the bearing directly above the bearing.

once the shaft breaks free from being bonded together you’ll have to find a way to hold the plastic housing tabs open enough to get the bearing back into place. Once I got the bearing back into place and the steering wheel set where I wanted it I went ahead and disconnected the telescope motor so it will never move again 🤣🤣🤣

total pain of a job but I think it was easier then removing the whole column. Good luck!

Yes, it is telescoping. I may try what 08z51 said below and try to get it back in place without pulling.

@Ryguy00000 Did you manage to do this without removing the column? Any help would be appreciated - I have the same issue on my 2011 GS with the telescoping wheel - the retainer has popped off. The shaft moves back and forth but I cannot get the bearing back past the plastic tabs.

no I tried for a while but called it on account of working in the heat. It’s hot down here in FL and didn’t want to mess with it anymore so I took it to a shop. They pulled the column and told me the bearing welded itself. Ended up sourcing a used column that they reinstalled.
