Default High oil pressure with Melling pump

I recently had a cam installed and had a Melling high volume pump put in as well. Obviously until the oil temp gets hot and thins out pressure will be higher but my oil pressure gauge maxes out and on the DIC im showing 80-85psi at like 2k rpm’s just going through the gears being easy on it…When the car finally gets up to 210+ it’s more normal but why would the pressure be so high?? Is that common for a Melling pump or do I have some sort of blockage? LS3 wet sump car

There is no need for high pressure or high volume pumps on wet sump cars. Period.

Well, I didn’t know that… but it’s on there so it’s too late now. I changed it when I did the cam because prior to the cam my oil pressure would drop down to 23psi at hot idle. That may have been fine but that seemed a bit low to me.
Im hoping the high pressure is common with the Melling pump, but that just seems super high

Nothing to worry about, my Melling pump runs about the same, not quite 80 cold and then 40 warmed up. Running Amsoil 5-30.

Will be fine, and blow off valve in oil pump will keep the pressure from going over pressure.
The only down side, with the blow off valve being forced open now greater than normal at higher rpms, any debries that do find it way in to the blow off piston, could cause the valve to stick open, and loose all oil pressure isntead.

Nothing to worry about. The dry sump cars like the manual GS's, Z06's peg out the oil pressure gauge on start up and for awhile until the oil temp comes up.

I’ll take a video later today and post. I just thought it was odd that my oil pressure was on the low side prior to the cam install and new pump and now it’s really high. Once I’m above 200° I think it’s okay but I’ll have to check to see how high it gets in the upper rpm’s. I know when hot I’m about 48psi at idle and about 65psi at 2500rpms

GM Racing literally recommend we shim our oil pumps 150/1000” 20 years ago, so I always shim or replace. Now we know the oem pumps cavitate above 6k

anyway, which pump did you buy. Melling makes it very difficult to find the right, slightly higher volume and/or pressure pump.

I went with the 295hv, and yes it’s pretty high cold,

Melling 10296 high volume
Here are a couple videos… Now this isn’t on a hot motor so obviously pressure is going to be higher but this seems a bit high. I got the oil temp up to 220° today and in mid rpm’s the pressure is about 65-75psi but when you stab the throttle it jumps up to 85-90psi but that’s high rpm’s

Mine is the 10295 model, as I stated above mine is running similar to yours cold. Not that our cold is really cold in AZ…

After watching your videos, my oil pressure does not do that after warm up. Yes it will increase slightly with higher rpm’s but doesn’t peg the gauge.

Ive read the 10296 is usually higher than the 10295…. Once the oil is up over 200° it’s more “normal” but when I get up in higher rpm’s it still gets in the high 80’s
