Took my '08 Vert to the state Insp. Station today, and I parked the car where the Inspector told me to. I told him that the shifter has had trouble releasing from Park and to tell me if he has any trouble getting the trans out of Park and that I would release it if necessary. This car has had the solenoid bypass performed with the wire thru to the glove box by me. The problem is the limit sw. that energizes the release solenoid does not always make contact to send power to the shifter release solenoid.
Well he tells me the car passed inspection but he tells me he left it in neutral with the E-brake on. Get in and drive off and now I can't get the shifter to go past neutral, (no reverse, no park) Can't even shut the car down now. Only way is to disconnect the battery. What I think happened was the inspector just king kong-ed it to move it down the line. Do you think he messed up the reverse lockout mechanism? I do know that the button on the shifter will not depress at all. Any tips on getting this thing working again besides getting a new shifter?
Update. Well after much cussing, finally got the shifter back into park. It seems as if things fell back into place. The shifter works now w/o any binding. Don't know what I did but, going to put the console back together and see how she does. It was pretty scary driving home with only drive and neutral.
OP, you have mechanical skills.
"Fell back into place" would drive me crazy; not knowing the root cause.
Brake pedal, solenoid, cable (both) ends, and shifter release handle all come to my mind as sources.
I would be interested in knowing if you ever find the root
Well so far the shifter works fine, no problems. And yes its driving me crazy not knowing how it got fixt! I think the problem was the spring loaded shifter release button wasn't pushing down far enough to get over the detents(?) of the shifter. Only the Inspector knows what he did. I think he used to carve meat before this profession. How it got like that IDK. But I managed to walk the shifter back into park by releasing the spring pressure on it.
Shift cable and both ends were fine, tranny too, no binding there. The problem was contained within the shifter itself. i'm just glad I haven't had to throw any parts at it yet. I was dreading that job, just parts, my cost were like 550 bucks. It already has the solenoid bypass Mod. just in case the limit Sw. doesn't make. Although I did notice there were not one but two limit Sws. in the shifter housing. Does anyone the sequence of operation for these limit Sws., I thought there was just one, but now I'm confused. Thanks!
