Do a ranger bleed on the slave cylinder fluid, which may help if the fluid is dirty and slave not getting a full throw to fully disengage the clutch.

If not, then its a problem with the reverse syncro in the trans if you can get to the actual reverse gate, but not the final throw to get it into reverse instead.

I have flushed the clutch fluid multiple times. If it was the synchro would it be going in smooth when it does go and it always goes in when the car is off?

Brass synchro is the reverse gear, and the lower photo is what is has to mate up against on the other side of it.

So as the brass inner three slots elongate in the first link, it can over rotate to end up with tooth against tooth tip on the other side to the mating gear, and when the trans is turning, will not final engagement since its bound teeth tip to tip to not allow the syncro to back rotate to slip in. When you shut the motor off, then do not have that rotation force pushing the gears tooth to tooth tips index, and the gear can back kick with ease, to allow it to engage.

Simply, if it was grinding going into gear, then would be the friction disc that is worn to not allow the gears to speed match, but its slot channel wear to allow it to over rotation to teeth to teeth index that is not allowing it to back blip enough to engage when the trans is turning instead.

As for the sad part, trans has to come apart to replace the brass reverse gear, and at that point, may as well refresh the rest of the trans parts as well. If can pull a trans from the car and apart, its about a $100 fix between gear/ fluid/gaskets, while if you are having someone else do the work, $1K to pull and replace the trans, and about another $2500 to pull the trans to refresh instead..

Default 05 reverse

I have a 150,000 mile 05 and I have as always found if you pump the clutch and move the shifter from 3rd to 5th while RPMs lower then to reverse it seems to work!!

if it was synchros would it not grind when it does go in when running? On the few times it ends up going in to reverse while running it is smooth as can be

Here is the fix if you want to repair the trans yourself (replace the worn out bronze blocker ring) and best to replace the clutch packs at the same time, as well as any other parts that are worn while you have the case open).
