I bought my 4th Corvette, a 2008 convertible, basic model in February’23. It’s gorgeous, loud, and had only 45,500 miles on it. I immediately experienced the overwhelming fuel smell associated with a failing fuel pump. The Chevy dealership I bought it from ghosted me, ignoring emails and not returning phone messages. FYI, Stingray Chevrolet in Plant City, Florida.
It’s now at the Tarpon Springs Chevrolet dealership and the quote for repairs is $3200+ as they say they found the rear main seal to be leaking. I’ve seen no evidence of a leak, my garage is clean. They said it was early, but since they have it torn down it’s easier to fix it now.
I’ve not experienced this level of repair on my other Vetts, 82, 84, 86. Is this a misery that I have to endure with this 2008?
Well that’s quite a stretch imo, you smell fuel but now have an expensive repair looming for an oil leak. I bet after the oil leak repair you will still smell fuel. Get that car out of that stealer ship asap.
If the drive train is already down and they can show evidence of a RMS leak, I'd get it done while it's in there. When I've asked in the past, they will usually walk me on the shop floor and show me if requested.
If the drivetrain is not down yet, I'd hold off and get a specialty shop quote to replace the fuel pump with drive train in. I can be done and I honestly don't trust people on big jobs anymore. Too much rush at a dealership to get it out the door.
As others said get it out of the stealership asap. Get it down to Lyle at C&S Corvettes in Sarasota. You'll be happy that you did.
Out of curiosity, did you go back to Stingray? I've dealt with them in the past and found them to be very honest and back their cars. I've also always found them to be wicked expensive.
