Default EBCM Repair/Replace

Posting on behalf of my friend with a 2008 C6 that needs some guidance.

"CUSTOMER STATES DASH SHOWS SERVICE VEHICLE SOON AND STEERING LOSES POWER ASSIST. DIAGNOSTIC CHARGE $185.00 Cause C0450 STEERING ASSIST CONTROL ACTUATOR P0963 PC SOLENOID. Correction NEEDS EBCM P/N 89060341. PART IS DISCONTINUED FROM GM. IF USED PART IS FOUND, LABOR TO REPLACE WOULD BE APPROX $800.00 PLUS TAX."

The above is from his service order at the local Chevy dealer, are there any recommendations that I can pass on?

Two parts to a EBCM.

If the control board with say a cold solder joint, walk in the part to resolve that one.

On the other hand, if the problem is the pump/valve side since someone do not change the brake fluid enough to not allow water build in the fluid to do damage to the valves, then crap shoot if you can MEK solvent clean the vales instead. The valve caps are pressed in place, and no easy way to remove them to clean the deposits in the upper sections of the vavles instead. Hence problem like sticky valves.

Now having said that, since most of the time it was just a cold solder joint that caused a EBCM problem in the first place, long before the fluid side had problems, easy enough to find a rebuilt EBCM for a few hundred, or send your unit in to be rebuilt instead. The down side, is GM dealers will not use these parts, so would need to find an Indy shop to swap it out, once you have the replacement unit in hand.

To add, be thankful that the dealers are still looking at the C6's, since over on the Harley side, dealers will not touch/take in a Harley that is 10 years or older, since HD no longer makes the parts if needed for repairs.

I had my 99 C5 at the same Chevy Dealer a month ago, heck I think they even work on C3's still, there were two in the service lot when I drove by this week!

Hold on.

P0963 is a fault in the transmission control module.

C0450 is a fault in the steering assist control actuator circuit, which goes from the EBCM to the rack, but a forum search shows that the problem is frequently a loose or dirty connection.

Make sure that the loop from the EBCM through the steering rack is intact before replacing modules.

This ^^^.

First step is to check the connector on the EBCM and the associated harness. Hopefully the dealer already did, but maybe not. The steering assist control function is part of the EBCM. If in fact it's bad, call the ABS fixer guys and ask if they can fix code C0450. If they can't, look for a used one. They are around.

P0963 is a different issue.

Good luck, let us know how it works out.
