Hi all - I have a new-to-me 2010 GS auto with about 28K miles on it. The harmonic balancer is (predictably) wobbling, maybe 3-4 mm, and has likely been doing so for some time. It was my father's car and he wouldn't have known it was an issue to look for. I ordered an ATI balancer, ARP bolt, and a crank seal but they won't arrive for a week+.
I have a local auto-X event in a few days and I was hoping to try the 'vette. Do you think it's okay to run it as-is? It's usually a short course (<60 seconds), mostly 1st gear in my T56 F-body, but lots of high RPM work.
This is just me...
I can get away with an amazing amount of stupidity, with no ill effects, as long as I'm unaware of any problems.
As soon as I learn of a potential issue, I'm guaranteed an immediate failure.
I'm sure everyone's luck runs differently, but I wouldn't even think of doing it!
If it's really as bad as you're saying, why take a chance, especially since you've got the repair parts coming. You've got the Firebird & the Mustang.....drive one of those.
Shouldn't drive the car at all with a bad HB. Should it fail completely, it can cause a good bit of damage. Could even wipe out the main bearings pretty quick.
I was lucky with mine just barely separating yesterday after a hard track day causing a belt noise at certain RPMS. If it hasn't been done, I would change it. Maintenance item for LS engines
