Default Harmonic Balancer/Cam

do you guys think replacing a harmonic balancer, cam, oil pan gaskets, powering steering rack, tie rods, alignment, etc etc all supplies/labor involved for 8200 is nuts? 5200 labor.

Let's back it up. Why do you think all these things need to be done? Have you sought a second opinion?

the HB has the wobble for sure. 2 different shops said I have the gasket leaks at the oil pan. The power steering rack has been identified faulty with a local Vette specialist. Interested in the cam swap.

To start with, I don’t think that’s $3000 in parts, but post the estimate and price list.

there is a lot of labor involved but at $150/hr that’s over 36 hours of labor. Which is more than a lot.

get another opinion.

also, you’ll need to tune it after you do a cam. I personally would recommend that you leave it stock. It would cut down on the labor by a good bit as well.

to do the cam you need to drop the front cradle as well as pull the radiator out and move the ac condenser out of the way. No cam means leave the radiator and condenser alone. On these cars, that will save a little chunk of time. They’re not super easy or quick to pull.

leaving it stock isn’t as “fun”

I think the price is high as well. The other shop quoted me a 3200 for labor/parts for everything but the cam swap.

That estimate has a few significant issues.

1) A cam swap typically takes no more than 8 hours. Even at $150/hr that would only be $1200.
2) By dropping the cradle to do the cam swap they are approximately 20 bolts away from being able to change the oil pan gasket. At most an extra hour of labor would be fair. This would be synonymous with paying for a clutch job and the shop wanting $850 extra to change out the slave cylinder.
3) I don't see the labor for replacing the rack listed anywhere, unless it's part of the misc. labor charge? I would find out how much they've accounted for that because like before, at most it would justify maybe another 2 hours of labor given how many other parts would have been removed at that point

Hope this helps..

Agreed. Plus $150 in shop stuff is pretty nuts. Some rags, brake cleaner, rtv, locktite, antisieze…. $50?

Not to mention oil at almost $20 a quart which I missed earlier.

Yeah I think it's high as hell too. I am like how did it go from 3200 labor/parts from another shop without the cam to 8200 with parts/labor with the cam install. Not happening

Most people are removing the rack when doing the HB I am assuming, lots of the videos I have watched they are anyway. Maybe included

How much horsepower are you going to get from that? The shop I use (corvette) quoted me 6k with about same parts. I think going super charge is a better deal HP versus cost

that would be super cheap, the parts for a supercharger are 6k. Most reviews I’ve seen from that are 45-50 RWH and torque
