Another newbie question, I see transmission tune referred to. What is this and what does it do or not do?
I'm from the TH400/ B&M Shift Kit generation and trying to get current!
It makes your A6 wake up and smell the coffee!!!!! I do not know the technical side of it, but after my dyno/street tune, it was a different animal...... You will get a little power, but the drivability experience is worth the cost. My session cost me around 700.00 (road and dyno tune). You can probably go just dyno and save 200, but I feel better with the road conditions added to the build of the tune.
I'm like blownbayou and don't know the mechanics of it ,but the tune increased the pressure on the shift points which made the trans shifts firmer.I didn't want it slamming into the next gear but just a crisper shift.
One thing I have noticed is a slight flair on upshifts under light throttle. This does not happen in competition mode. Will a tune help this? BTW, car has 44K miles. Just bought it a few months ago.

Just for reference, I'm from two trans generations before you and still learning.
A trans tune can change pressures, up and down shift points, which can allow and assist power flow to improve performance. It's all done electronically. Since you have an '09, I'd suggest you should contact Jim Mero (google and search on this forum), who was the GM trans guru. He's created tunes to fit all sorts of conditions according to your driving style and needs. If you're looking for raw acceleration performance, a higher stall torque converter makes even larger differences along with a compatible tune. It all depends on how serious you want to get and how hard you want to play. Talk to Jim first.
Do shops that do an engine dyno typically also do the trans dyno? Are engine and transmission tunes done at the same time?
typically yes.... 6l80e and newer transmissions have tons of control tables that can be tweaked. Software also exists that helps produce those tables that tuners use with inputs for car weight, stall speed, ect. I've done a little tuning on them myself and their a whole different animal than the older 4l60 junk. Def not for the faint of heart but once you have a general understanding they arent too bad. You can also enable/disable things like TUTD and auto upshift.
