My 2007 with only 5300 miles was running fine, fast, no misses, very happy, but then the serpentine belt shredded and I got several warnings: Check active management; tire pressure; the engine symbol came on. When I read the codes it showed the cats are the problem, both of them. The car had been sitting for several years and I just bought it, probably why the belt quit. I was driving it like I stole it, so maybe the hard driving was too much. Is there any chance the cats are good or can be made good, with only a few thousand miles on them it just doesn't seem like they should need to be replaced.
Thanks in advance.
PS, the car has a Magnuson charger, headers and SLP mufflers. and still runs amazingly quick.
Like I have mentioned here recently “bad” cats are an “EFFECT” and not the cause of your DTC’s especially with a car with 5300 miles….cats should last as long as the car and trouble codes are NOT parts…since the car had been sitting awhile I would maybe suspect issues with your injectors being clogged…are P0420 and 0430 set ??…an exhaust leak anywhere between the front and rear O2 sensors can cause these DTC’s…also oil or raw fuel contamination and coolant can destroy the cats…find what is causing those DTC’s before replacing the cats and if you do need to change them OEM is what you want to buy and not aftermarket !!…where in NY are you located ??
I just put a dose of Rislone injector cleaner in the tank. Could that have caused the codes?
No !!…the closest best diagnostic shop I know of is in Avoca which is about 170 miles from you…you really can’t just start replacing parts to diagnose these DTC’s.
Thanks, I understand, I won't accept any repairs. just diagnostic. I'll let you know what he says. The apt is tomorrow.....
I've wanted to check him out for a while now. It would be great if he's in line with your (and mine) thinking. It's a 30 minute drive.
@C5 Diag I'm curious why only use OEM cats and not aftermarket?
Because the OE converters contain the proper amount of precious metals in them that make the cat work correctly…that is why they are more expensive…if one lives in California or NY the cats must be CARB compliant or they will fail inspection.

Eric at SMA is one of 2 fantastic techs I've seen on YouTube, other one is Ivan at Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics but he is in State College Pennsylvania.
Well, Eric was no help!! Here's his reply: "Working on a modified car in NY with aftermarket cats is illegal for any shop owner. In NY we have very stick cat/exhaust laws (As of Jan. 1, 2023) that we must follow. With an aftermarket supercharger, software and exhaust system I am not willing to risk my business to make a few dollars. Sorry. Perhaps look for a shop that can perform work on vehicles with custom tunes."
I've found a mechanic who specializes on Vettes closer to home in Syracuse. I'll let you know how he works out.

Here is the NY Law regarding aftermarket Cats: https://govt.westlaw.com/nycrr/Docum...8sc.Default%29
I prohibits installing or selling aftermarket Cats in NY, it doesn't say anything about working on Cats that have been installed in a car, or working on a car that has aftermarket cats already installed.
I think Eric should get a copy of this law.
