Last night my wife and i went to dinner in our 2012 grand sport,All was well until i tried to put it in park in the parking lot, Well it wouldn’t go into park,Or any gear it just kept rolling,I tried all gears and nothing. The shifter went from one position to the other with no change,My question is could a cable have snapped or the neutral safety switch gone out ?
Is this a stick or automatic car. If a stick - There is no cable but there is a rod that goes into a toothed shaft that is then camped with a bolt like on a exhaust band clamp. If that is really loose is could do what you are saying. Do you here any of the gears moving when car is off. Is the shifter real easy to move now (this would indicate rod not connected).
Not sure - if it an automatic but a broken cable that would be a sign of that.
Its typically one of the shifter end plastic bushing that has failed, either at the console end, or transmission end. It's normally the one at the console that gets most heat, so it gets brittle and breaks.
Many treads on it with pics. A new cable will have new bushings. If you are mechanically inclined, you can remove the radio surround console and remove the shifter to get at the bushing to replace. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...th-pics-4.html
Thank you so much my friend,This is a very good vid,Now if i can just get someone to help me with this. I have had this car 12 years and absolutely no problems. Thanks again !
My buddy's car lost the bushing at the transmission end first. Jack up the left rear (use jack stand) and crawl under to check before you pull the shifter out, just to save you the trouble when you determine the point of failure. I would however, recommend changing both, we did that, just at different times.
Also, the video doesn't call out an important cautionary item. Be VERY careful pulling up on the shift cable when removing/replacing the bushing at the shifter point. It is easy to pull up too far on the cable and it will snap at the cable retainer bracket a bit further down the tunnel. If this happens, you will then be required to change the shift cable, which comes with pre-installed bushings.
Good luck and report back when you complete the work...GD
This guy has some great content. I’ve just got back into Vette world about a mont ago and have been watching some excellent videos that this guy in Florida has. I think this video was well put together and warned about pulling up on the cable. Check it out and hope this helps you get back on the road in short order!
