2007 with 59k miles. My Chev dealer says I need to replace the steering gearbox. However, I have no indication of leakage or wear, and absolutely no "play" in the steering. Don't know how they make the determination that the gearbox is worn to a needs-replacement level (without driving the car), but I'm inclined to NOT replace it at the present time. Anybody have experience with a worn steering gearbox? Anybody ever replaced one after only 59k miles?

Stop going to "stealerships". Likely nothing wrong especially at only 59k miles.

Sounds like the "Stealership" is trying to scam you into paying for unnecessary parts replacements......especially if there's no evidence of any fluid leak or change in steering response.
Run, don't just walk away.
Yes, it is a rack & pinion setup and No, they are no longer available new from GM. You will need to find a rebuilt unit to change it or locate a vendor that performs the rebuild on your unit or find a working unit from a salvage yard.
If your current system appears to be working and is not visibly leaking fluid from the rack seals, then maybe you could just ignore the dealer advice. Or obtain a 2nd opinion from a reliable corvette service facility that could put your mind at ease.
There are tools to let you check the pressure inside the system when turning and see if a thing is leaking internally. I guarantee the dealer didn’t install it and recheck
Either rank is leaking or its not.
No such thing as a worn rack or gear box, since pre-load on them can be adjusted to take out the slop.
Hence on the older gear boxes, adjusting the pre-load on them from time to time is part of the norm, but a lost art, with shops just want to replace them, instead of readjusting them that only takes about a min instead.
Also to point out, no new racks, only rebuilt rakes, and its a crap shoot if the rebuild rack you get, is not going to leak from the start to begin with.
My C5 had 108,000 miles on it when I sold it. Had a power steering leak that I suspected to be rack until I found it was the notorious hose leak.
Turn One Steering can rebuild your rack if needed, although at 59K I doubt your rack needs it unless there is a problem.
At 108,000 miles, the C5 steering was still tight and drove great.
My guess is the 22 year old fresh out of tech school doesn't have a clue what he is talking about, and the service writer couldn't tell you what end of a screwdriver is. Find an independent service shop you trust, dealers are only good for cars in the 1-10 year old range.
