FYI ... So far , I have discovered that Calico Coatings will re-do the Ti rods with a coating more durable than the OEM Chromium Nitride .

FYI - the spec you are referring to is called “rod side clearance”.

Another FYI ... SBC/SBE Steel rods measure .940 wide on the big ends ... but Ti rods measure .944 ... thus losing .008 clearance per journal

The factory spec for rod side clearance is not very precise. The measurement can vary by almost 0.016 and still be OK. What did yours measure before and after the machine work and recoating?

I haven't had the machining done yet ... the purpose of this post was to discover who was re-coating ti rods , and then to find out how thick their coatings were . Calico's coating for the rods is 1-2 mils thick . I just learned this last week . My target dimension for the machining has not been finalized ... but I'm leaning towards 0.932-0.934 . I'm currently running a 421" Gen1 sbc with LS7 OEM Ti rods and questioned the lack of clearance when assembling the engine (I was getting .008-.010 per journal) and was assured that it was enough ... but what nagged at me was that at that time , no-one could/would give me a direct response to the actual heat expansion rate of Ti vs Steel .
