Does this sound right; can these things fail that quick? This just happened July 14th resulting in a huge towing bill, plus a 4 day delay at the dealership in Kalispell waiting for parts. Final bill just over $800 plus towing etc.
I have talked to others in the group with over 100K on their C-6 autos without any shift cable problems at all.
It's a bit suspicious because I just had the trans fluid changed about a week earlier at my local service shop just before this trip. This necessitates jacking the trans up an inch or so to get the pan off apparently.
I don't believe in coincidences and it wasn't my usual trusted tech who did the work. Not that anything could be proven one way or the other anyway. I am happy to have it repaired and running again though; made it home without issue.

My 2011 GS with less than 16K miles (I am the original owner) recently experienced the same shifter bushing failure. I was lucky to get the car into drive and get it over to a dealership in the town that I was driving thru. The dealer had the cable in stock. $900 repair and I was lucky that I did not need a tow or required to spend a night in a hotel while my car was repaired.
Dano; thanks for those pics. One of the guys in our vette group actually had that exact grommet kit with him, and gave it to me in case that was the problem. But apparently mine was the cable itself, or so I was told. Maybe GM doesn’t stock just the bare grommet, who knows.
Manny, you got way luckier than me, finding that cable in stock. My total cost was about $3000 with the tow, repair, 3 nights motel and 4 days car rental. Yikes what a blood bath.
Kind of what i figured. Why would they sell a grommet kit for $10 and 1/2 hour labor when they can get you for an $85 cable plus 3 hours labor to R&R? Oh well, no sense crying about it, its in the history book now.

Yes, no, maybe, since you can get under the car to replace that grommet, but still need to dig the center counsol apart to change the other grommet, since will in same condition.
As for dealer, will replace entire cable, since all they carry, and don't have to worry about cable snapping on one that may have had the grommets replaced a few times.
As for cost of repair, kind of goes back to you, since if you are doing your own oil changes (or a shop that knows what to look at), then while under the car, take a look at the condition of the shifter cable grommet you can see to begin with, and if its time to replace them, before they fail and pop off the shafts.
