I have an auto 2005 I’ve replaced my shifter cables 2 times now. The first time the cable broke about a week later my shifter would move through the gears freely and only stay in neutral. I replaced it again and not even a week later it’s doing the same thing just moving through the gears freely but if I slam it into park i will go into park then I can drop it into drive again then it’s repeats again where it moves freely until I slam it into park again. Anyone know what the cause of this is. This will be my 3rd time replacing my cable in 1 month
First thoughts....
Non OEM cables.
Routing issues causing binding or a missing bracket or cable attachment.
Most co-members report cable end bushing failures not cable failure.
Second...
Are the cable ferrals breaking?
Is the cable itself breaking?
Any damage/ witness marks on the cable shroud?
Is it the bushing breaking or dislodging.... at the shifter or the trans case?
Third...
Are you forcing the shifter handle/ lever/ ****?
Perhaps the micro switch is locking up and this forcing is the root of the cable breaking.
A photo of your damaged/ broken cable may add insights for your forum co-members.
Hence trans lever in drive, shifter assembly in drive, install cable and close cable adjuster to that length, so cable length is correct length to start with?.
A broken shift cable does not start and stop working randomly. It is either broke and will never work again or it's not a broken cable. You have something else going wrong. Sounds like a shifter problem if it moves freely then starts working properly. The shift solenoid will not allow the shifter to move if that is the problem.
