No precautions…just make sure you jump the right ones…the RUN/CRANK RELAY on the back of the BCM when it receives the correct inputs from the FOB and brake petal switch energizes terminal 86 of CRANK RELAY 43….you can check if it energizes by probing terminal 86 during starting for 12 volts or at ECM Fuse 12…if voltage or test light illuminates run/crank is good…the solenoid is clicking so looks like power is getting down to the solenoid…the starting system for my 08 is a little different as far as the “control” side of the starting system.

ok the first time it cranked. Surprised me so I pulled it out. 2nd time I got the hollow clang and it shocked the snot out of me. Didnt crank but it was such a fast shock i threw the paper clip.
Don’t worry you won’t get electrocuted !!…as long as you leave it in it will continue to crank…I have 2 ways to test relays…much prefer the “U Activate”…just flip the switch…if still clicking I would replace starter with the new solenoid.

well not electrocuted but a nice burn. Charred the end of the paper clip.
Gonna try with pliers this time.
So if it continues this hollow clang then the solenoid needs replacing? Do they come separate from the starter or a combo?
You can probably find the solenoid but if were ME I’d be replace the whole thing…you can find a few on Rock Auto anywhere from $58.79 to $280.79….all are remanufactured though…you can try NAPA also…stay away from Amazon or EBay as a majority of their parts are counterfeit !!

thanks. About to order the ac delco from rock auto.
Good times
While you’re down there I’d clean ALL the wiring down there until they are bright and shiny and also remove G106 which is the battery negative block ground and clean that too…won’t hurt to clean the engine block at G106 also.

yeah since I'll have to remove everything to get it out I'll clean all the connections. Glad I bought the quick jack.

while I'm waiting on my starter to arrive I'd be interested in any theories.
I put the paper clip jumper in first time and it cranks.
2nd time the loud hollow clang and sparks fly from the relay slot and paper clip. havent retried since.
I'm thinking on it when the car does crank there is no clang. Only on the attempts to start and nothing happens do I get the clang and then it's only the first time. The remaining attempts no clang, no crank. Until it does actually start and it's usually a good start. don't notice a clank.
Any thoughts there.
On that one you should have to stick a small screwdriver and separate that tab seen at the bottom to release…that slot is where the connector locks onto…and clean the body ground and the other 2 !!…if you have a 12 volt battery laying around you can test that starter.
yep. All good. thanks for all the guidance.
Now to my next gremlin. The sony aftermarket head unit a previous owner installed works but the clock changes time randomly (several hours randomly) and right now stays about 30 mins off.
more investigating.
