My digital tire pressure gauge shows 2 or 3 psi difference in reading from the car gauges. Which one is more accurate?
It's 4 vs. 1. I'm going with the TPMS. Atmospheric pressure can cause them to read differently, but it shouldn't matter if you're at sea level in San Diego.
My two digital gauges are two pounds different than my three cars, I go with the gauges because it really doesn't matter that much. I'm not racing the 24 hours of LeMans. I live at 4300 feet, that could be the difference for my gauge vs, the pressurized tire?
TPMS sensors are not gauges, they are meant to be used as an early warning for gross problems with tire pressure. Use your tire gauge, figure out what pressure you like with it, and keep it at that pressure by monitoring with the gauge. I keep the Vette at 29 or 30 psi for daily driving.
That said, over the years I have found the TPMS sensors typically are within a pound of my tire pressure gauge. I have never used them for a gauge.
I have several tire gauges (stick type, pushes a stick out of the body with the pressure printed on it), some purchased and some free with sets of tires purchased. I checked all of them against the same tire at 1 time and kept those that came out with the same pressure reading. I recheck them every few years and I'm happy with them. I'm a little hesitant to purely rely on the tpms setup, each tire has its own internal mechanism so how do you confirm all 4 are reading the same?
At 1 time I had a digital pressure gauge. I'm not sold on them as this one started giving readings I just wasn't sure of. I ended up changing the battery and got totally different readings. With a new battery it was very close to the mechanical tire gauge readings, but when does it start going off?
