Default Clock Spring 07+ usable on 2006?

Good morning! Long time lurker here. I helped my 78-yr old mom check off the one thing on her bucket list - own a Corvette! Unfortunately it's been a tough year of electrical gremlins and other issues for her 2006. The radio was drawing way too much power, and there were other issues that caused the battery to drain rapidly.

After taking it to two dealers, the second correctly diagnosed another issue - the horn was no longer working. I need two discontinued parts: the clock spring (2006 airbag steering wheel coil, 19133742) and the steering wheel module (Airbag Sensing and Diagnostic Module, 80947253). I've found the latter, but the former is basically nonexistent at this point since the 05, 06, and 07+ use different clock springs.

I've spent hours looking on this forum and elsewhere for the answer to my question. The question: Can an 07+ clock spring (P/N 26129609) be used on the 06? It appears the wiring connectors are different, but I can't find a solid answer on whether the 07+ can be used on the 06, and what retrofits need to be done. It seems the only difference in the 07+ clock spring is the addition of wires for the steering wheel audio controls on the 07+ models. The 06 and 07+ steering wheels are identical except for the audio controls, right?

I'm grateful for your answers. I've owned older Miatas which aren't this hifalutin' with all the fancy electronics. Also, I'm considering having a shop do the work if I get the parts because of the possible safety issues. I've already replaced the alternator on the 'vette, which was a step forward for this very occasional shade-tree mechanic. My mom will be thrilled if I can finally get her baby to ride.

Thank you!

I think they are different and can be hard to find. I purchased a used clock spring from a junkyard in Arizona with a 30 day warranty, in good condition, and it has worked great. One man's trash is another man's treasure, so here's to your airbag and horn working soon. Beep beep.

I believe there have been a few to add steering wheel controls to an 06 by installing a clockspring and steering wheel from a later year. Can't remember if any other wiring needed to be modified.

I've seen a few references to this, but I'm not looking to replace the whole wheel (if possible). Maybe I'm stuck doing so.. Thank you!

It's a bigger deal because where it's located requires an annual inspection. So the car needs to be fixed somehow!

Hate to ask again, but does anyone know? I've been digging into part numbers and old threads on here. There's a lot about completely replacing the steering wheel with a newer one, but nothing about trying to keep the existing '06 and just replacing the clock spring and airbag module. I know there is some rewiring that would have to happen, but is there a functional difference with the new clock spring aside from the A/V connectors? I worry about all of this because it's linked to basic safety issues. Thanks in advance!

A few months back, this poster said he had one for an 06 that he hoped would work with his 05 + 07 steering wheel. I’d imagine he might be willing to sell it?

also, in case you’re looking it looks like the part number you want is:

19133742

The later cars with steering wheel controls use the same part number airbag that was introduced on the 3-spoke wheel in 2006, before steering wheel controls. So the connectors at the airbag are the same. The big yellow 4-conductor connector on the other side of the clock spring certainly looks the same. I think the odds are pretty good that your airbag wiring will be plug and play.

There are different clock springs for telescoping vs. non-telescoping wheels, so I would get the right one for your setup.

Remember not to lose the little locking clips you have to remove in order to disconnect the airbag. They have to be re-installed for the air bag to work. The air bag computer passes a test current through the system to confirm the presence of the air bag initiators, so if something is disconnected you'll get a warning light.
