Default Climate control issue

I have a 2009 convertible with milage of 12,800 that I only drive if the weather is nice and I can put the top down.
I know the A/C works fine because I use the A/C if it get hot with the top down.
Last night I had the car out with the top down and it got cool (read 73 deg on dash temp indicator).
I had the A/C off and the HVAC was blowing cool air so I turned the Temp controls (both driver and passenger) to 80 deg and hit the auto button.
A/C came on blowing cold air.
I turned both Temp controls to 82, then 85, then 88 --- still blowing cold air.
When I finally turned the controls to 90 deg, then hot air started to blow out and fan came on max
Tried doing this again and again but could only get any heat with temp controls at 90 deg.
Any idea what's going wrong here?
Thanks, Rudy

The cabin temp sensor is located to the left of the starter button, behind the slots.

So for starters, break out a flash light, shine into the slots, and see if you can see the end blue thing on the sensor just behind the slots.
If no, then the rabbit hole of pulling the bezel to pull the sensor out of the bowels of the dash, snap is back on to the bezel, and when you are snapping the bottom of bezel back in, make sure ot does not pop back out.

Also, the sensor has a fan in it it to draw air, so if you do need to pull the bezel, canned air is a good way to blow the dust off the fan so it can draw more air in the first place, or just replace it if you can find one in stock. GM10444273 or SMP AX104.

Now back to be on the vet with top down, and that you have the air that is rolling back in with out say rear windscreen in place, the cabin temp sensor is going to struggle to really get the reading in the car, hence chest level and foot level at the same time.

So if car does not have a wind screen, may want to think about adding one if the intent is to drive the car around with top down/have the HVAC on at the same time.

THANK YOU for this write up. I've have some things to checkout and pull out that sensor to check it out and it clean up.
But with so low mileage on this car it doubt its clogged with dirt.
Unfortunately, that temp sensor part is discontinued, so if it's pooched, then i'm screwed
I'm old school and always hated all these electronic controls which always go bad. Give me mechanical controls with cables on everything --- including the throttle body

I read someplace you can do a soft re-start I never had need to it, but I wrote the procedure down, what do you have to loose?Soft reset of the A/C control module

Press both defroster buttons(front & rear) and the fan speed up. The side of the fan button that increases the speed.
