I agree with "Got Vette". And I am following what the manual says.

Drove my 2000 back from Wisconsin and it started with 23 miles on it, tryed to keep varing speed and did the best I could and it ran fine after that. Changing speed I guess is good although not completely sure if I believe the explainations for that. Someone did say and I can't prove right or wrong but with the Mobil One being so good that one really needs more than 500 miles to effect anything.

The manual also says don't do any full throttle starts.

But as far as an arbitrary speed limit of 55 mph is concerned, that has GOT to be a lawyer talking.
Don, if there was no metal to metal contact after the engine started, the engine would last forever as long as it wasn't shut off. I think you can figure that's not going to happen.

The 55 mph limit is just a function of getting people to keep the loads down.

The advice from some of the people here for varying the engine speed and load is good advice. If there is any tempering of materials, then those materials need to be upgraded.

I can't comment on the thermal cycling of the transmission and rear axle, and its effect on breakin. I never worked in those departments. I suppose the mesh patterns could change with temperature, but I would like to hear the opinion of a powertrain engineer.

I remember at the end of the factory tour we witnessed assembled Vettes making their way onto the dyno, one by one. I really remember how much those assembly line workers quickly made those motors hum through each gear. So I figure taking the break-in period easy and under 55 mph with varying rpm is the fail safe way. If I had to break-in a new vehicle, I would drive it and not worry too much about the rest.

I drove mine directly from the dealer to my shop and flogged it on the dyno. Then I drove it 60 miles and flogged it on another dyno just to compare. It has 300 miles and 10 dyno runs on it now.
I will note something from this. The car has a bunch of knock retard with our crappy 91 octane. The best I could muster was 338 RWHP. Lowest was about 330.
I added some Torco and it made 349. I think the 10.9 with such a small cam may be too much.
I'm pulling the heads and cam tomorrow. I expect 400 RWHP by the end of the week.
