Default Need Help on Jacking & Maintenance

I’ve identified the jacking points. I have 4 questions:
1. What's all this stuff about jacking discs or pads?
Can I just use a 2x4 or would that be it too high?
2. Any advantage as to which side to jack up for an
oil change? And is the filter tough?
3. Any advantage as to which side to jack up to
install the CAGS eliminator?
4. Saw Rhino Ramps discussed in previous posts. Is
using them easier than a floor jack?
Thanks in Advance

Just my opinion:

1. I would buy the pads, not only for your own sake but in case you need to have your car on a rack you can keep the pads in your storage box in the hatch area and safely have your car lifted. They are $69 a set of 4 and can save you some major damage and heartache. Yes, you can save yourself a few dollars if you only have your car lifted at home but not worth it IMO. Another thing to mention is a 2X4 could slip, while the pad locks in the underside in the slots even better reason to go for the pads.

2. My first Vette and never changed the oil yet, so I will pass on that one.

3. I installed CAGS eliminator by backing up on some ramps. Be extra carefull not to go too far! Took me more time to get my ramps out than it took for me to install the eliminator. There are two plugs on the tranny, CAGS is clearly labeled.

4. Don't know either.

Hope that helps and GL!

I've changed the oil in my C6 twice already. I am using the Rhino Ramps rated for 12,000lbs. I know it is over kill, but it makes my wife happy.

Changing the oils very easy you shouldn't have any problems. The oil filter and oil pan plug are easy to get to, you will need a 13mm socket to get oil plug off.

FYI, the filter and plug are on the left hand side.

John,

I just received your order. Thanks a bunch. Normally we have these in stock and can ship right away. Lately we have been slammed and trying to get our inventory back up. I should be able to ship no later than one week. Thank you very much. You will love our quality

PS. Your Jacking Pads will be RED

Jeff

With the new oil pan on the LS2 do you still have to lift the rear a little more than the front to get all of the oil out like we all had to do with the LS1/LS6?

Default BMW sells the jacking pads that will fit for 8.00 each

You can leave these pucks in already installed in case you have an unexpected stop. They are rectangle shaped not round and will stay in the holes.

2x4 placed where discs go work just as well
I bought Rhino ramps $20 Pep boys 8k capacity-But you need 2x12x2 's in order to get front on Rhino's -Pep Boys also sells BERG RAMPS rated 12K lbs-you don't need 2x12's I picked them up for the same price $20.00 -(lower in some parts of the country)- I recommend the BERG RAMPS! Use ramps to change oil-safer and easier!!

I always went to a service place for my oil changes on my C5 and that's what I will be doing on my C6 so take these comments for what they are worth -

Don't you have to have the car level to get out all the oil? or maybe tilted slightly down at the front? The oil pan is flat bottomed and doesn't have a well.

Also I have read in this forum that the puck slots are the places you would put jack stands. And you should use the frame points as shown in the manual for jacking?

John, I have both the "hockey pucks" and BMW snap in and forget lift pads if you ever need to borrow them (I live less than a mile away from you). At least with the C6 you will not need to lift the rear in order to get a full drain...I have to do that with my C5.

I used to change my oil/filter every six months....but since I only put about 3,500 miles a year on the Vette...I've opted for a yearly oil change.

Mark

Hi JF,

Maybe this will help...Before my 'BMW' pads arrived my son wanted me to disconnect CAGS. I used old shop wood we had laying around to raise the car. So there are usually zero dollar ways to get around issues. You scratch the under panels if you don't use pads. If you were really cheap and had a 3" or so hole saw you could drill a chunk out of a 2x4 but the bmw pads were so inexpensive that we went with them. The tip for the pads came from this very forum...so thanks guys.

The oil plug was pretty close to the bottom and the filter was on one side so you could get away with lifting one side of the vehicle. I'm not going to do that because I have enough equipment here in the shop to lift the car and get it up and level.

hope that helps...

Would switching to a magnetic oil drain plug be a good idea?

Default Thanks Guys

I'm no longer dangerous. Have the pucks coming in. Getting Rhino ramps this weekend. The adventure continues. Now I'll be OK, as long as I don't drive off the ramps

I thought the rear end had to also be elevated so the oil will drain completely out.

LS Won, yes, the rear end on the C5 has to be elevated in order to get a complete drain. I never used the pucks (or pads). I simply drive my Vette up onto my homemade wooden ramps (2x10s... three high, staggered so that the front air dam clears at all points). I get under, drain the oil pan...then I chock off the front tires (so that when I lift the vehicle will not move). I then lift the rear with a 2.5 ton jack using the rear crossmember and do a complete drain. Then I lower her and change the oil filter. It's a real PITA...but I understand that with the C6 they placed the drain plug on the side (so there is no need to lift the rear). I have the pucks (and the BMW small circular pads that snap in), but I've never used them. The dealer that I use (RK Chevrolet) for State Inspections and coolant changes never use pads...and they never use my CAI pucks...they are very careful to ensure that the lifting points (where the slots on the underside rail are located) are contacted by the "spider lift" so that the rocker panels do not get damaged.
