The last couple of mornings I drove the C6 to work. And I noticed as I accelerated through the turn of one of my favorite on-ramps, that these tires are really slippery when cold. I drove it the second day just to see if maybe it was poor throttle control on my part, but I think not. I know for sure that with fully warmed tires, I have gone much faster through the same turn with virtually no traction loss. Compared to the Bridgestone SO-3s I have used a couple of years on the M3, there appears to be a greater need to get these Goodyears warmed up. Has anyone else noticed a greater difference in cold performance than other tires?
I noticed a lot of different responses to your story. Not all of them mentioned whether they had the Z51 tires or the standard tires. I think that there may be a diffeence in the tread compound in the SC's that would cause some of the C6 owners to experience cold weather problems while others did not.
When I was racing, we said that the tires were "greasy" until warm. That is why we weaved from side to side: to clear "marbles" from the tires and to keep heat in them. This is probably too drastic a maneuver for the street, but perhaps you could accellerate and brake in a straight line a few times, or change lanes, to heat them up. The race tires also had a limited amount of heat cycles before they lost effectiveness. This usually happened before they lost tread depth, even though they were shaved to 3 or 4 32nds.
If we can separate the Z51's from the standard ones, maybe we can see a pattern. Maybe the stock tires are OK and it is only the SC's that are cold weather sensitive.
The bottom line is these tires SUCK.. and for the price of 1 i could get 2 contisport contact2's which grab better and probably last longer. I cant find 1 thing i like about these tires.. they suck in the rain they have terrible traction even when warmed up.. i hate goodyear tires they are garbage.. Gimme a set of Michelin PS2's or Potenza S03's and ill be happy.. hell even Toyo T1's grab better and they are about 15lbs lighter A TIRE.. thats 60lbs of unsprung weight you can relieve just by switching to T1's
I absolutely agree. I just put the second set of Michelin Pilot Sports on my C 5 Coupe at 109K miles. The Gen II run flats on my C 6 cannot compare with the Pilot Sports. Much stickier, let road noise and no rear end twitch when I hit a expansion joint at speed in a curve.
Sure hope Michelin has Pilot Sports to fit the C 6 when the C 6 hits about 20K miles or so.
