I just read that GM is axing the mid-engine C7. In the latest edition of Corvette Enthusiast, it said that work on the C7 has been halted due to the finiancial difficulties with GM. They also stated that it looks like the C6 will be around longer than planned, possibly 12 years, which means it will be 2017 before the C7 comes out. Sounds a little like the introduction of the C5. The C4 ended up being around longer than originally planned.
a mid engine vette would Stomp Butt. The car would handle like I dream and the traction would be off the chain.... Damn those Lambos
I am not against a mid engine layout but in its current form it does kick butt, even high $$ butt

Where is the big mid engine advantage?
I am not sure about the idea of a mid-engine vette. My understanding is that the price would have to go up significantly. Also, it will greatly reduce usable storage space (hatch area gone, and only a tiny storage space in the front.
What mid-engine car under $150k has dramatically better performance numbers than the ZR-1?
I absolutely hate the idea of a mid engine Corvette. Part of the Corvette's appeal is that it is a RWD car with the engine in the front that can stomp all over mid engined cars that are supposed to be faster. Like someone said, it would also reduce practicallity. The current Corvettes can all hold 2 sets of golf clubs in their trunks. If they were mid engined, that would not even be near possible. The price would go up as well. The current Corvette ZR1 will spank a Ferrari 599 GTB for a third of the price. Make it mis engined and this would no longer be possible.
The Corvette has been front-engine, RWD for 57 model years now. Why change it?
From time to time I feel compelled to point out that the Corvette has technically been a mid-engined car from the 1984 model. It merely has the passenger compartment behind the engine. This has a number of safety advantages. It makes cooling simpler and allows cost savings by being able to share components with other vehicles.
A rear mid-engine can share components with a front engine, front wheel drive car like the Fiero did. However, the Fiero did not have a 430-638 HP engine. GM does not a have a front wheel drive set-up that can take the power levels of the Corvette.
By the way the Fiero could hold the golf clubs. So rear mid-engine cars can have some level of luggage space.
