Default A-Pillar Preference

I've had an issue with how the designers integrated the C7's C pillars with the rest of the roof, especially on the CF version. I find it jarring, much preferring something like what Aston did on a car I saw at a recent show:

A recent post of the C7 in stunning Atomic Orange really made this clear to me. So, a poll. The choices will be "as designed":

or, as Torch tried to (poorly) illustrate:

So, please look past my rotten art (or, better yet, can someone do a better job and add that to the post?) and vote

Thanks.

I think in that view it would look ok. but from the side and front angle the contrasting color would highlight how beefy the A pillar was. Not svelte like the aston. I've seen other shops of this and the front windshield also starts to look strangely large or disproportionate when it is separated from the side glass.

I think it looks better body colored with the top on, but think it looks better black with the top off....

Interesting -- but do you think they could paint the C7 in a way that the painted part is about as wide as the AM? I bet the part that is black just in front of the AM's mirror would look bad in body color, but they left that black.

The top part of the C7 A-pillar is not so thick, but at the bottom there is a bit of gussetting that could stay black and deliver the intent, I think. My drawing skills stink because that is what I really wanted to show.

Bingo that is huge. I was wondering when someone would figure that out. There are no easy fixes. Paint it and it comes off as funny looking with the top off. Paint it body color with the top on it looks cool.

Picture this, if even possible. A C7 Coupe like below but with body painted "A" pillars. Looks fine with the top on. Remove the top and I agree the painted "A" pillars look like two sticks pointed up with only black across the horizontal windshield.

What if the front of the removable top is opaque or blacked out to hide whats underneath. What is underneath is a horizontal body painted trim piece connecting the two "A" pillars. Top on black across the front, top off now body color. Hey, I'm trying!

I think what he was trying to get at is if the A pillars were body color, when you take the top off, the upper portion of the windshield header connecting the 2 A pillars would be body color as well. Personally, I don't think that would look right either.....

Which is consistent with my view that the Vert would NOT look so good with painted A-pillars. I think, unfortunately, that no matter what you do with the A-pillars, the C-pillars look chopped off when the targa panel is removed . So, why not worry about optimizing the look with the panel on?

I would NOT paint the windshield header! Look again at my lousy illustration. Unavoidable compromise to get the Aston look...

Photoshop has a trial DL. You can lasso the areas you want to paint, then enhance, adjust color, adjust hue and saturation, check the colorize box.

The roof does come standard in body color so...

I think the coupe's A-pillars should be painted, and the convertible's should not.

The coupe's painted A-pillars will still visually connect with the C-pillars even when the roof is removed.

The present coupe's unpainted A-pillars make everything else you try to do with the roof look disjointed. The C-pillar is painted, the A-pillar should be painted.

I also think the middle of the removable roof panel should match the middle of the halo. Either both are painted or both are carbon fiber.

I know they were trying for the wrap around windshield look, but the unpainted A-pillars on this design look a bit unfinished. You have two spears pointing forward. They moved away from the wrap around back window, why not finish the job with the front?

Fortunately, this is minor, and could easily be changed later if GM changes their mind.

Michael

Solve one problem, cause another -- on a black car, the not-quite-black vents and lower rear fascia look funny.

That's nice, but with the painted panel I am OK with the black A-pillars. If you did this mock-up, could you show us what it would look like with the Aston treatment? I'm betting better than what we saw at the unveiling...
