Sorry if this has been covered already. My dealer wants a $20k deposit to order my C7. This seems reasonable but I just wanted to check with the board to make sure this is par for the course.

Thanks!
i hope you're kidding. if not, I suggest you walk...no run...away from that dealer. I've heard experienced everything from $1,000 when GM accepts the order to $2500 now to get in cue.....but $20K?! It's your money....but you did ask
Sounds as if the dealer has few allocations and is trying to lock you in, so your don't go to another dealer when you discover that other dealers are getting C7's and this dealer isn't.
Nothing like driving by another Chevrolet dealer, that has allocations, and seeing a new C7 sitting on his showroom floor, unsold, when you are waiting for your dealer to get your C7.
Anyone who deals with dealers who want UNREFUNDABLE deposits needs their head examined. There are many reputable dealers who will stand by their product and give you refundables. What incentive does the dealer have to do a good job or get you your car on time? This should be a red herring and tell you to beware of doing business with them, especially AFTER you have the car. Not worth your time
And even if it is a small store with a small allocation, why would the dealer worry at all? I mean after all it's a C7 that will be flying off the shelf right?
Word of warning... A local dealer closed after taking a 30 grand cash deposit and the buyer was screwed out of his money.
The dealership owner embezzled millions and got caught and killed himself as well.
Long time dealership..
Moral of the story....don't give anyone a 20 grand deposit
Use one of the forum vendors. They are honest reputable and offer excellent purchasing experience. Msrp is the order of the day for a c7
While MSRP might be the order of the day for many dealers, it's not cast in stone. Dealers are taking orders for less than MSRP.
Of course, the cost to go get a car 1500 miles away just to save $500 or a $1000 off MSRP has to be factored in. But, you might only have to go 150 miles away, or 25 miles away to get that better deal.
$20,000 is way too high. Find another dealer. Whatever your deposit is, it should be refundable if the delivered price is over whatever you agree to. All in writing.
I do not want to buy a C7 from a dealer who would sell below MSRP. I wouldn't think he was to bright, giving money away that is not necessary. It would be just like "you" ( whoever that is) selling your car for less then it is worth. Ask yourself if you would sell your car for less then it is worth? ???????

You would willingly pay more than you had to, because it made you feel that the dealer was smart to take more of your money?
My dealer wanted just $100, but I've been buying Corvettes, Suburbans and other cars from him since 1984. The only reason he wanted any money at all was to establish the DATE of the order. When the C6 was introduced, there was a lot of grousing among the sales staff and customers about the "List". This solves the problem.
