And since ,in an interview, they did not seem to focus on ground-breaking safety, I think it has to do with aero/rigidity ....

Still how would this protect a human any more than a regular bumper?
On the other hand, how much does this really help with air flow? I just don't see the major advantage to the loss of style. (its not terrible, but I would like to understand why something that looks weird was designed on purpose. Especially since I know I will be asked later on when I am driving one.)

You need to ask the engineers at GM, Ford, etc. They are all having to do it.
