Took a 2013 A6 GS for a spin at the dealer to help me get a feel for how it ran compared to the stick and was confused for a bit when it didn't behave as I had expected with both paddles being able to up or down shift.

...same here, I just couldn't get the hang of the paddles. I will order a stickshift...my wife will be able to drive it, will get confused by the paddles for sure.
Not me. I liked being able to up/down shift with either hand with our 2010 GS. Meant I didn't have to reposition a hand if I'm driving one handed. Or think about which shifter does what in a hard slow turn. Certainly seems less intuitive if you're right about that.

I've owned 3 C6's and as much as I thought GM should have originally set the up-shift on one side and down on the other, it will be difficult to un-train 9 years of shifting the same way with either hand

The C6 paddles were able to up or down shift on both sides.
Hope they get the shifters OFF the steering wheel and onto the column or at least make them large enough to grab and actuate while the wheel is turned.
We're not all "track guys" and actually need to shift while the wheel is still cranked cruising around the neighborhood.
My wife's 13 BMW 335 does this and it's great. I can't believe the vette didn't change this sooner.
Yeah BMW made the paddle switch around 2010. My 2008 335i had up/down on both paddles and my 2011 135i down on the left and up on the right paddle.
Even before the paddle switch, the manual gate on the shift **** switched in 2001 too. My 2000 323i had up by pushing forward and down by pulling backward, this was reversed in my 2001 330i.

Not sure what this means. Leave it in full on auto mode in the neighborhood though and you're all set. It'll shift for you.

both paddles doing the same thing is easy.
I see it as a disadvantage if it's going to be up on one side and down on the other

You're right. It's a dumb move in my opinion. I've had an A6 for 7 years now and do most people realize that your hands, when making turns are not always in the same place? But, it is what it is and I'm sure I'd get used to it. However, I can see my wife getting confused and downshifting when she didn't want to.
My current C6GS is right up, left down --- but, I did reverse the wires on the right module inside the steering wheel.. So, not a "stock" shifting pattern... I have no idea who thought the C6 paddle design was a good one.
