Default Navigation Updates

Does anyone know how the new Navigation System will get updated with new maps, since there are no more DVD slots?

In my last Benz (2007 model), I went to the dealership and they downloaded it. It may be same scenario for the C7.

Why can it not be copied off a GM web sit via computer onto a stick at home? Garmin does this directly onto unit.

Better still, put your laptop inside the car, download from GM site, via home Wifi straight into the NAV unit.

Yep, and my $85 Garmin 40LM gives me 4 FREE updates annually for LIFE directly off my computer. Planning a trip? I just take the Garmin into my office where I can program it while doing route planning on my desktop in the comfort of A/C(my garage is not air conditioned). Also while sitting in front of my computer, I can print off motel confirmations, restaurant menu's, tourist info while planning my trip.

In the car, my passenger can make changes to the Garmin without having to pull off the highway.

Garmin's LIFE does not mean your life. It means the LIFE of the product. Which probably means maybe 5 yrs max. Better than nuthin, but is somewhat of a joke.

I have no details on the pricing, access or details. It's going to be a wait and see until I get any additional information or the first one of us goes in for the update.

Default It would be interesting....

...if you didn't order the Nav when you purchase the car to see if it could be "programmed" in at a later date.

LIFE means as long a there are maps available, unit has sufficient memory, etc, not 5 years max***. I also have a old Garmin (6-7 years old)and I can still get map updates for it, as they are still available). How long will CD's be available for the crappy NAV in my $80,000 C6 to update the maps?

Can I get a new NAV from GM that will install in the hole in my C6's dash that will allow it to be updated via the internet? How about if it takes a dump and need replacement after the warranty runs out? My Garmin takes a dump, I spend $100 for a new one with the latest features and FREE lifetime map updates.

So, even if the LIFE span on my Garmin is 5 years(which it isn't), that's only $20 a year($100 for a new one divided by 5 years) and I get five years of FREE map updates, 4 times annually.. Compare that to the $200 GM gets for a new CD for my factory NAV.

How much will GM charge to update the C7's factory NAV every 4 months? You can't even update the crappy C6's NAV every 4 months as they only issue a new CD every 12 months.

***"¹If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately) or if your Garmin product comes bundled with a nüMaps Lifetime or other lifetime map subscription, you will receive map data updates when and as such updates are made available on Garmin.com during the useful life of 1 compatible Garmin product or as long as Garmin receives map data from a third party supplier, whichever is shorter. A product’s “useful life” means the period during which the product (a) has sufficient memory capacity and other required technical capabilities to utilize current map data and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more. Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic area included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. In some instances, your Garmin product might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update to the map data, in which case you will need to either (a) select reduced map data coverage for your updates, or (b) purchase separately a microSD™/SD™ card (if and as applicable to your Garmin product) and load all or a portion of the map data coverage for your updates to the card and insert the card into the microSD/SD card slot contained in your Garmin product. If neither of the measures in (a) or (b) can be used to address your product’s lack of sufficient remaining memory, then Garmin may conclude that the “useful life” of your product has expired."

I've been a Garmin fan since the first Street Pilots available somewhere around 1990. The best one was the StreetPilot 7550 which had dead reckoning. Finally updated to the recent 3597-my first LIFE map update. The 7550 no longer had new maps. Before I bought maps about every 2 or 3 yrs, only to update store and business POI's.

The only reason why I will get NAV on C7 is for the HUD integration.
But I suspect that I will still have the Garmin handy.

Over the yrs, not only software changes, but also hardware. My plan is to keep the C7 a long time. I still have my 73 C3 that I bought new. In 5-10 yrs the C7 Nav hardware will be obsolete anyways. It will probaby be replaced with a Kenwood or just lay there dead.

The C7 Nav hardware should be a plug-in with enough pins to accept any new plug-ins.

Face it, one would not need any updates at all --- if you just keep going to all of the same old places. Any updates would just slow down your mapping.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but my salesman when I bought my 2012 Corvette told me that Chevy's OTHER than Corvette are updated through their radios.

My 2013 Nissan Leaf navigation unit is updated through Nissan's CarWings, a service something like GM's OnStar. My guess is, you will need OnStar service to keep the nav unit up to date. The Corvette navigation system is integrated with the car's electronics, you will only get half the information with a hand held Garmin. I would think Corvette's navigation it will be something like the Nissan Leaf's presentation which is super. I will get the navigation option when I place my order.

While the Garmin won't tell you how long to keep a frozen turkey in the center glove box until it's reached 160*F, it will tell you important things you can use while driving such as the speed limit on the street/road/highway you are traveling on, and will give you both audible and visual warnings if you are in an area where speed camera's are used. I can also look at my Garmin and see the maximum speed I reached while driving around Talladega.

And, since the Garmin is not tied directly into the car's electronics I can replace it for $100 with a newer Garmin at any time. I can't do that with the obsolete factory NAV that is tied into my C6's electronics.

If my factory NAV takes a crap, do I lose my radio & CD player also, since they are one unit?

Is the factory NAV on the same circuit boards as the OnStar?
Or is this a seperate board that is plugged in. It is added when NAV is ordered?

My guess is that the GPS module is always present whether NAV is ordered or not since OnStar always needs to know where the car is if there is an accident or the car is stolen. If the GPS module is always present, then when the NAV is ordered, some extra software is loaded up and probably a software flag is changed or a jumper is modified to turn NAV on. Anyone know how this is actually configured.
