Set the unlock feature to unlock all doors. Then, the gas door will be unlocked when the fob is within range of the car. It works for me.
I think the problem is that people are saying if they drive up to the pump, open the door, and then try to open the gas door, it is locked. They are never specifically unlocking the car. It sounds like a minor design flaw to me that hopefully could be fixed with a firmware update. If Chevy is going to try to automate the unlock of the gas door, it should not be locked if you get out of your car and haven't locked the door.
Wait, so there is no button on the instead to pop open the gas door like the C6? I didn't really know this. If you have to only press the door unlock button before you get out, or when you open the door, then it is pretty much the same right?

I just do not have that problem. After reading the posts here, I decided to see if maybe my gas door had a problem in that it would always open. So, I approached the car without the fob and the gas door will not open. Then I got in and started the car with the fob in my pocket, turned the car off, got out and closed the door. I then opened the gas door. Either I am just lucky or something is not set or working correctly with some cars.
First time I filled up, I stopped at the pump, got out and closed the door, left the FOB in the car. As usual the car drew a crowd who watched me not be able to open the filler door. DUH.
I unlocked the car with the FOB it worked. I know how to do it the right way now, but it was slightly embarrassing... LOL

This is the way that mine works. It is a non-issue.

That is not the way that it works for me, at least I don't think so.
For the record, I do have it set so that "remote unlock" unlocks all doors, and "passive unlock" unlocks all doors.
Ok, I figured out what is happening. The car now (I don't believe it used to do this automatically and was controlled by a setting that seems to have disappeared after one of the updates) auto locks the doors when I pull the car out of park (I have an auto). When I put the car back into park, it unlocks the doors, but not the gas panel -- oops.
So when I pull up to a pump (because I have to drive there, since I don't have a gas pump in my garage/drive way), it is always locked when I get out of the car. System needs an update so that when the car is placed in park it unlocks the doors AND the gas panel -- or a setting to control this. Until then, I'll just hit the door unlock button on my way out of the car when I'm going to fill it.

Good analysis. Definitely sounds like a firmware mistake. Hopefully easy to fix. Not a huge deal, but it shouldn't work that way.
where the complication comes in is if you have your initial unlock setting to unlock only your driver door...you have to unlock all the doors - as the GAS DOOR is a DOOR!
It seems like you Gentlemen have it all figured out already. I'd thought I would drop in and leave the C7 owners manual references in case anyone may be wondering.
Keyless Unlocking
Press the door handle sensor to unlock and open the doors if the
RKE transmitter is within range. See Door Locks on page 2-11 and
“Passive Door Unlock” under Vehicle Personalization on page 5-41.
Passive Locking
This feature will lock the vehicle several seconds after all doors are
closed, if the vehicle is off and at least one RKE transmitter has been
removed from the interior or none remain in the interior. The fuel door
will also lock at this time. To customize whether the doors
automatically lock when exiting the vehicle, see “Passive Door Lock”
under Vehicle Personalization on page 5-41.
If you are also interested in the locking features and "Delayed Locking", that can be found on page 2-13 of the C7 owners manual.
